Man Dies After Riding Busch Gardens Ride

By Associated Press
Published July 25, 2006, 11:05 PM CDT

TAMPA, Fla. -- A 52-year-old man who complained that he felt sick after riding a roller coaster at Busch Gardens died about two hours later in a hospital, park officials said Tuesday.

Thomas M. Welch, 52, of Palm Harbor, was responsive and talking after riding the Gwazi roller coaster Monday morning, but quickly lost consciousness, spokesman Gerard Hoeppner said.

Paramedics attempted CPR and used a defibrillator, but Welch was later pronounced dead at University Community Hospital, Hoeppner said.

The ride was closed briefly after the incident to make sure it was functioning properly, Hoeppner said.

A telephone call placed to the Florida Fair Rides Inspection Bureau was not answered.

Gwazi reaches 50 mph at its highest speed and drops from a 90-foot lift, but does not go upside down, Hoeppner said.

"We don't believe that it was ride-related," he said. "We have very extensive and stringent ride systems and safety procedures. This particular wooden coaster is inspected every day."

Gwazi has written and audio warnings along the way cautioning guests from boarding the ride if they have high blood pressure, heart problems or other illnesses, Hoeppner said.

A woman who answered the phone at the Welch residence declined to give her name, but said the family was grieving and would not comment.

A woman who answered the phone at the Hillsborough County medical examiner's office said they would not release any information until Wednesday.

You still have to admit that if this was a nother Disney death then the Media would be all over it. I briefly saw it mentioned on the noon news here in Orlando but it was just a small blip. When it happens at Disney you have CNN and every major news channel in the world jumping on the news... like a shark smelling blood.

"Riders trapped upside-down in roller coaster mishap

(Saturday, July 1, 2006) - At Fun Spot amusement park in Angola, Indiana, 12 riders were left stranded upside-down, 50 feet in the air for 40 minutes after a roller coaster train stopped suddenly in the middle of a loop. Firefighters used their bucket to push the cars through the loop, and riders were then evacuated. Seven of the riders were treated at the scene for minor heat-related injuries and shoulder and neck pain. Five of the riders were treated at a local hospital for similar injuries and were released.

A state inspector said a seal for an air cylinder regulator failed, causing the mishap. During an annual state inspection in May, seven problems were found with ride, and the park was ordered to repair welds on the track, replace missing bolts on the launch car, install missing seat cushions, replace the front right wheel on the third car, tighten tie bars, and install missing lock nuts. All of the problems had been corrected and the ride was compliant at the time of Saturday's mishap."

eek!
has Disney ever been at fault for anything like this?
from what I hear it always seems to be the dault of the rider or down to some pre-existing medical condition.

Wow, it's hard to believe this just keeps happening. It's not the parks fault, but there are just so many deaths in so little time.

I kinda agree but I think that's really stupid that people will try to sue Disneyland because they're family member died on a ride. You know it was their fault they rode a really fast and jerky ride when they have heart problems!

But this is how I feel about this.....This was the park's fault and I think they have the right to sue.

But this story scares me! Whenever I have read one of these stories and I'm at Disneyland I am afraid to go on the rides but everyone tells me that kinda stuff doesnt happen in Disneyland.

But I have one question. I heard that one small child died on Big Thunger Mountain so they had to slow down the ride....is this true?
