Secret History of the Disney Monorail

Did you know that the Disney monorail was started by a now-defunct company called ALWEG? The first Mark I trains were built by ALWEG and were used not only at Disneyland but also in Seattle (where they still run today). The later Mark IV trains that ran at WDW were designed by Walt Disney Imagineering and built by Martin Marietta evolved from the ALWEG design. The evolution continued with Mark V trains at Disneyland designed and built by Bombardier after Disney sold the patents of the previous designs. The Mark VI, also built and designed by Bombardier comes in two flavors: automated and non-automated (running today at Las Vegas and WDW, respectively). Other evolutions of the original ALWEG design are in operation internationally by a handful of municipal agencies, built and designed by various international companies.

I am compiling details on the origins of these systems, and their respective historic ties to Walt Disney. My intention is to present an online multimedia eseum (electronic museum). The website will be the largest collection of art, plans, and photographs ever assembled on the history, present, and future of ALWEG-derived monorail systems and other systems with historic Walt Disney connections. The site will be nothing short of spectacular. I'll post more about it as I get closer to launching it!

I'm glad your research is being fruitful... just don't call it a "secret"! ;)

ALWEG did not build the Mark I Monorails, they provided a design that WED Enterprises modified to fit the smaller size and desired, tighter turning radius needs. The Seattle Monorail are also different from the Mark Is with the ability to walk between cars being a big difference.

Bombardier did not build the Mark V Monorails. They were done by Ride & Show Engineering reusing the chassis from the Mark IIIs.

Thanks for the correction. When I'm ready to launch the site (which will be better researched than the message which started this thread), would you mind proofing it before it goes public?
