SeaWorld San Diego to turn Aquatica water park into Sesame Place theme park in 2021

Sesame Place San Diego will feature seven theme park rides geared toward younger kids and 11 water park attractions along with character meet-and-greet opportunities.

>>The extensive makeover of SeaWorld’s Aquatica will keep many of the water park attractions and add a Sesame Street theme along with a collection of kiddie rides. The highlight of the new park will be a faithful recreation of the “Sesame Street” television show set featuring the famed 123 Stoop, Mr. Hooper’s corner store and Big Bird’s massive nest. A Big Bird-themed carousel will sit across from the Sesame Street building facades.

The seven kiddie rides are expected to include:

  • Super Grover-themed family coaster (similar to the Vapor Trail by Netherlands-based Vekoma Rides at Sesame Place in Pennsylvania)
  • Spaceman Elmo-themed spaceship spinning ride (similar to Elmo’s Flying Fish at SeaWorld San Diego)
  • S.S. Duckie-themed rotating pendulum arm ride (Crazy Bus-style kiddie ride shaped like a submarine)
  • Abby Cadabby-themed wave swing ride (similar to Tentacle Twirl at SeaWorld San Diego)
  • Cookie Monster-themed rope climbing tower ride (similar to Kid Power Tower at Legoland California)
  • Hot air balloon-style spinning ride (featuring balloons themed to Sesame Street characters)
  • Big Bird-themed carousel (similar to the Sunny Day Carousel at Sesame Place in Pennsylvania)<<

This is exciting to hear! Growing up in NJ I pretty much lived at Sesame Place throughout my childhood. I have wonderful memories there and it's actually what got me obsessed with theme parks. Glad that now other children on the west coast have this opportunity too!

The only issue I see is the target age. Sesame Place in Pennsylvania is made for children, and the rides there reflect that. I feel as if turning Aquatica into Sesame Place is weird as Aquatica has some pretty thrilling slides, and the looks of the concept art shows they will be staying. Sesame Place in Pennsylvania has all age-appropriate slides. I wonder how slides like "Cookie's Monster Mix" will hold up, especially with it's high height requirements.

So will they change the lyrics in the them song when they say " can you tell me how to get? how to get to sesame street?" yeah just take the i-10 to san diego. all this time sesame street was by the ocean. who knew?
