Sea sickness and cruises....

I've never been on a cruise before and would love to take a trip on the Disney Cruise Lines. The only thing is that I get sea sick. I've heard it's not bad though, becasue the ships are so big that you don't really feel it. I've also heard that taking motion sickness pills and eating green apples can help. But, I'm still afraid of going and ending up sick in bed the whole time. What do you guys think? Has anyone else here that gets sea sick easily gone before? How was it for you? Sounds so fun though, I'd love to try it........

I get motion sick, seasick, car sick you name it! I'm a big believer in Transderm Scop patches. They are a little bandaid you wear behind your ear and it slowly releases medicine that helps with motion sickness. You need a prescription for them. I'm actually using them when I fly to the World this weekend and to help on the rides too. I've taken 2 cruises and done very well with the patches.

We have never been on the Disney Cruise Ships, but we have taken 5 cruises and no one in our parties have ever had a problem with sea sickness. On one trip, the ship was delayed departing for a couple of hourse while waiting for a large group of people whose plane was late. The ship had to travel a little faster to make up for the lost time, and you could feel the ship rock a little more than usual, but no one seemed to have a problem with it.

By all means give it a try, maybe just a short weeked trip to see what you think, but I bet you will enjoy it. Buy some of the medications that can help with sea sickness, but be ready that it may cause drowsiness and other side effects that can take away from the fun of a cruise.

If you do go, be prepared that when you are OFF the ship, you may consinue to have a feeling of moving back and forth a little. Your body gets accustomed to it on the ship so you don't noticed the moving, but when on dry land, we seem to have that feeling for a little while. Don't know why.

We are looking in the Disney Cruise/WDW packages next year.

Nothing to fear!

You'll be so distracted by all the other stuff to do on a Disney Cruise that you wont have time to get seasick!

We planned the 3-day just in case we couldn't take life at sea, and quickly wished we had booked the 7-day!

The ship is so huge, and we were so busy, that the only time we even noticed we were at sea was when you were lying still at night. The mild motion was very calming - not sickening!

HAVE FUN!

I am very prone to sea-sickness and was able to do a cruise with no problem. I was taking Dramamine each morning, although I probably didn't need to.

There were a couple times when it was bad. One day, we were in storms all day with waves around 20 feet. The ship was bouncing around alot and MANY people were looking green. My wife and I went to our room and took a nap -- by the time we woke up, we were in much calmer water and everything was fine.

The other time was when taking a smaller boat out to go snorkeling. It was pretty bad and a couple people ended up "feeding the fishes". :hurl: This is where I think the Dramamine gave me enough help to keep it in. It also helped me on the smaller boat to keep my eyes fixed on the horizon. And no drinking ...

I just got off the Wonder on Sunday and I can STILL feel the rocking. I still have my sea legs. Personally the rocking just puts me to sleep. I sleep really well on cruises!

You should definately try it. We felt some minor rocking while coming out of Port Canaveral on Thursday. But once you're in the "shelter" of all the islands in the Bahamas, you feel nothing at all. Just have some sea sickness patches with you and you should be fine. Don't let the fear of sea sickness stop you from trying it.

Sea sickness will usually occur on the first or last day of the cruise when the ship is under "full steam" and moving quickly. Thats when you really feel it. Happened to the Mrs. A little dramamine will end that quickly. I myself enjoy being rocked to sleep.

My wife and I just took a cruise (not Disney) and the rocking was very very minor. Plus, you are in a port almost everyday if you get sick while on board. Alot of people take dramamine (sp?) or get that patch behind their ears. I did not see a single sick person on our cruise and there were about 3800 passengers onboard. Taking a cruise is definetly one of the coolest things I've ever experienced and I highly recommend it.

I couldn't resist replying: Seasick? on a cruise ship?!
I am a retired naval officer who has seen more green water over the bow than I care to remember. Trust me; there is very little likelyhood you will get seasick on a cruise ship unless you talk yourself into it. Reasons:
1. The ships are BIG for the most part and are designed for comfort and stability. (the Disney ships are 80,000+ tons. I've been in storms at sea on a 3200 ton frigate. Trust me, at sea, size matters)
2. They have active stabilization systems that damp out most of the motions that cause motion sickness.
3. They plot the courses of the ships to avoid any adverse weather.
Don't worry about it - enjoy. Cruise ships are designed to make you forget you are even at sea.

we went on the wonder last year - and did encounter rough seas because of the hurricane activity in that region. even the crew members commented that it is hardly ever that rough. anyway - was feeling pretty miserable for the first night - until we stopped at the gift shop and found little things called "sea bands". they are like small gray sweat bands with a little plastic ball that you place right on your pulse point on your wrist. i literally felt better within minutes - less than 5 - and did not have another problem for the duration of the trip. the cruise was a blast from there on out - and the food was delicious.

My wife sometimes experiences motion sickness and she's told me one thing she does to minimize it is not to focus her attention too long on a fixed item. She says she doesn't read books if there's too much motion or else she feels queezy.

I have the tendency to get sea sick, and I got some advice before going on a cruise: get a cabin as close to the middle of the ship as possible. You'll feel less of the rocking and swaying, because cabins in the middle aren't moving as much. I ended up feeling a little woozy the first night, but fine the rest of the week.

You'll love it! :)
