Trip Report Scrub Country, Kingdom, World

I don’t really remember the first time I saw Walt Disney World. I must have been in kindergarten, ‘67 or ‘68. My dad had an elderly friend named Tom Bronson, a distant cousin of Irlo. Tom wanted my dad to drive him out to a piece of family property that had been sold off to a company that was going to develop it. Tom wanted to see it one last time before it was “all dug up”. We lived in Wintergarden and Tom lived south of hwy 50 off Maguire Rd between Gotha and Beulah. We didn’t go far and I don’t remember exactly where. I only really remember because when I was a little older some people came to our school with a film about the engineering marvels taking place nearby. I remember the A shaped hotel with rooms being lifted into place like drawers in a cabinet and most especially the Monorail. We were traveling to the Moon one day and building these marvels out in the scrub country the next. Tom thought it all quite funny that they were building “Dinky World” right out on all that “sorry land” south of Windermere. He also laughed at the idea of people going to the Moon. The very idea of somebody building a concrete castle amongst all that palmetto and live oak made him laugh so hard I was always afraid he would swallow the toothpick that seemed to always live in the corner of his mouth.

Dad took Tom to a preview of the Magic Kingdom and a few days later Mom went with a group from church who had been invited to the Grand Opening at the Contemporary, she got to see Bob Hope. My brother and I have January birthdays and for our birthday we went as a family. I was turning ten and was perfectly transfixed by the Tiki Room and Country Bear Jamboree. My favourite ride was the Monorail of course. We went a number of times after that until we moved away in 1975. Each time was better and better. I was sorely disappointed that we moved just as Space Mountain was opening and I never got to ride it. I did talk my Mom into going when we were down visiting my Grandparents in 1978. Space Mountain was a long wait for a short ride and it seemed the City of Tomorrow was just going to be another theme park... I pretty much lost interest in Orlando after that trip. My roommate in college and I went to Sea World in the early eighties but Disney wasn’t really even on our radar. I remained a bachelor well into my forties so never really had any interest going back until I met my wife in 2009.

When we were getting to know each other we went to Florida and she was anxious to fulfill her dream of going to Disney. She had never had a chance to go but had grown up in love with Disney movies. We still have quite the collection of VHS tapes of Aladdin and Tarzan and The Little Mermaid. She even has The Hunchback of Notre Dame. So we planned a trip and jammed a complete whirlwind of a Disney tour into 3 days then went back to visit Animal Kingdom on our honeymoon. Ten years later I’m a fifty six year old father of a 9, 7 and five year old who just had their first visit. That’s what this report is about. Now if I can just get this d@&#ed memory maker thing to work we’ll be all set.

So cast of characters. First is 9 year old Pooh, she joined our family at age 2 1/2. Buzz had shown up as a newborn 9 months before. He’s 7. They are both Inuit and hail from the far north of Canada. 5 year old Elsa made her presence known to us on her big brothers first birthday. She came kicking and screaming into the world about 8 months later. Inuit tradition holds that if you cannot have children you should Tiguak (adopt) and then you will be blessed. It worked.😀 Sneezy is the old man in the lower photo. He is blessed to be married to the beautiful blond Cinderella next to him.

Budget stuff. We are a family of 5. We live in Ontario, but we drive 30 minutes north to get to Detroit which is our quickest way to get to the states. Allegiant flies out of Toledo with the cheapest flights landing in St. Pete. Five round trip tickets and a minivan for a week around $1300. VRBO 3 bedroom house in Kissimmee for around $1000. 25% Canadian resident discount on base tickets to the parks $1575. We also spent about $1200 on food gas etc. But that figure includes a birthday meal in Detroit a full tank of gas just before coming home across the border and a van load of groceries that came home also. The kids were allowed to take fifty apiece from their piggy banks to spend on whatever they liked souvenir wise. So we totaled out at about $5000. More expensive than just going to visit Grandma and Grandpa who live near Orlando, but not horrible.

One downside to the cheap airfare. We landed late and took off early at an airport some distance from where we were staying. We understood it going in and knew we would be working with those time constraints. We packed food for our first day which we intended to be short as Grandpa and Grandma were meeting us at our rental early afternoon. The kids would be tired from the short first night. We got to bed about 12:30 Saturday morning and I was up at 5:30 to make a trip for milk and eggs for breakfast. Elsa tends to be a bit picky early in the morning so we decided last minute to have “dip-dip eggs” ready for her breakfast, just to avoid the hangries while in the ferry line. Pooh and Buzz wolfed down some oatmeal and we had them loaded in the car by 8:30...we had hoped for 8.

The kids had no idea where we were going...they knew they were in Florida, that we had a pool at the rental house and that Grandparents were coming later. We asked Pooh to read the Disney World arch as we passed under. Our dreams of delighted surprised vanished as Buzz groaned “Oh No! It will take all day I want to play in the pool with Grandpa!” The other two agreed with this assessment of the situation.

Did I mention this was November 24, the Saturday after Thanksgiving? Maybe I should have. Then you would have anticipated the traffic that faced us just inside that famous entryway our kids found so annoying. If I had mentioned it though it would no doubt have killed the suspense.

On Disney property at 08:52. TTC at 09:45. Somewhere in the back of my mind there is a Winnie the Pooh Fastpass that expires at 11:30

Here are the kids watching the ferry pull away without us.

And going to board the next ferry.

I never liked the ferry when we went in the early 70s. The monorail held my full attention. Dad loved the ferry. It’s definitely a better ride now. There is more to see. The Grand Floridian dominates the lagoon. As a kid I never took my eyes off the Contemporary and the monorail line. I don’t remember seeing the Polynesian at all. The islands were just flat green patches back then now they are lush mysteries. The optical illusion of the castle receding behind the train station is perhaps the biggest masterpiece of design of the whole place

Apologies for the thumb.

Then comes that first glimpse of Main Street.

Ideally, I would have made our first FP for Peter Pan's Flight. At 30 days out morning availability was nil so I got Winnie the Pooh instead. We had just under an hour by the time we hit Main Street USA to get there. My hope had been to make it in time to ride a trolley as we had often used our first A ticket when I was a kid to ride up Main St. in style. We were too late for that. A couple of Photopass stops and a pause for the Barber Shop Quartet and a Trolley Show that stopped right in front of us made the walk extremely pleasant though. the kids were starting to get into this Disney World thing whether they liked it or not.

"OK, we are starting to get it...this is ummm like kinda fun...I mean there's fun stuff to see"
IMG_0777.JPG

"I think we re getting close Dad, There's Pooh and people are hugging him."
Well, Pooh was going for a bite of something sweet so they didn't get a sticky hug but we still had ten minutes befre the FP expired. I gave my old friend Mr. Toad a quiet salute as we passed by his picture in the queue. Buzz was sitting next to me and I felt him jump a little when Tigger bounced into his scene and looked back to see big grins on our Pooh and her sister's faces. Our Pooh had arrived in our home as a two year old with nothing but the clothes she was wearing from a very troubled past. The first gift that my folks sent her was a Pooh bear from my uncle who had worked most of his life in childrens' aid. He passed away before he ever met her so I had a little sting in my eye watching her enjoy the ride. She has come a long way.
More to come!

Use a FP at the end of it's window and shazaam another window opens. Right around the corner from Pooh was Cinderella and Elena. Wait! What? Who is this Princess Elena? We cut the cable when Buzz came along and TV and movies are a treat at our house. My Cinderella went to google Disney Elena on her trusty iphone. We don't have a US plan so no data...I mean Disney has had parkwide WiFi for a few years now. Who needs a data plan at Walt Disney World? "Honey I can't get online is there a password or something?"
"No, it's supposed to be Disney Guest or something. Lemme try... Ok I got a weak signal just move around." I touched the MDE app on my phone just to check it out and it wouldn't load. What is this weirdness? OK TRIP RUINED!!! NO MDE and worst of all no SOCIAL NETWORKING while spending the day with my family. HOW CAN I LIVE LIKE THIS?:p

Meh, who cares who Elena is let's go meet this other Cinderella.

So I hear the powers that be will no longer offer photopass photographers at character meets so little moments like meeting the first princess ever is gonna look like the ride photos. Just so you know, Disney powers that be, we brought our own sandwiches this time because counter service wasn't good in 2009. We can bring our camera next time. We likes our photo pass photographers. The ride photos are fun but not the reason we buy Memory Maker.

So turns out Elena is a bit of a saucy chatterbox who likes warm hugs...just like Olaf.

Met these merry folk in the gift shop... realized later they probably didn't work for Disney...no name tags. maybe creepy folk. IDK.

OK, two FPs burned one to go but not for nearly an hour. Let' go see the Mickey Mouse Review, Just kidding. I actually really enjoyed the Philharmagic when Cinderella and I visited before. I did have to break the news to Dad later that day when He asked the kids if they enjoyed it. After trying to keep up with Donald's misadventures it was time for a turn on the carousel. Actually my first ever ride on it as it was not a priority when I was 10.

Leaving the Carousel we started looking for a place to sit and eat before heading to visit Belle for our last FP. It was quite sunny and warm but we found a somewhat shady spot on some of the planters between Pinochio Village and the wall separating new fantasyland from old. This area was a construction zone when Cinderella and I were here in 2009. We were one day shy of 9 years to the day of our first visit together. We had gone full out commando for three days. We stayed at POFQ with free dining. Ate at the Royal Table in the Castle, did the Christmas party, pesteredevery photopass photographer we saw, and pretty much walked on every ride except PPF, Soarin', and TSMM. We skipped Animal Kingdom that visit, but spent a day there on out honeymoon a year later. Cinderella doesn't do rollercoasters so that saved some line time of course.

Buzz and I held our seat and did guard duty over our backpacks while my Love took the girls to wash up. Buzz is the quiet boy who focuses so hard on his lego building or colouring books that you can kind of forget to ask him how things are in his life. "Are we going to see Grampa and Gramma soon, Daddy?"
"Yes, Boo. We are going to do one more thing then we are going to ride the train back to the front of the park and go see them. I think they will be waiting for us at our rental house. Do you like Disney World my Sonny Son?"
"Yes! Can we come back tomorrow?"
"Oh yes, we will be here four more days after this. Tomorrow we are going to another part that has an upside down waterfall and we will try to stay all day so we can see the fireworks tomorrow night. There are lots of fun things there to see and do, just like this part. Then we'll spend two more days here and then we'll go see another part that has real giraffes and elephants."

We sat quietly for few more minutes waiting for the girls and I took the opportunity to listen to the ghostly echos of the putt putt of the submarines and the excited voices overhead from the skyway gondolas.
