LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - In December, Sci Fi Channel announced that filmmaker M. night Shyamalan had granted unlimited and unprecedented access to the set of his new film, "The Village." What started off as an all-access puff piece for a summer movie rapidly became something more, as the enigmatic Shyamalan became increasingly uncomfortable with the documentary crew. The results is "The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan," a three-hour film that will air on Sci Fi on Sunday, July 18.
"Protecting the privacy and integrity of my set, for the actors and crew, is of considerable importance," Shyamalan said in December. "Agreeing to give unlimited access is a new experience for me. I hope that by giving the Sci Fi Channel access to the set of 'The Village', this project will demystify some of the mysteries of the filmmaking experience."
Apparently filmmaker Nathaniel Kahn, an Oscar nominee for the highly regarded "My Architect," got more than the simple demystification of the filmmaking experience. According to media reports, Kahn and producer Callum Greene ("Lost in Translation") ran afoul of the temperamental writer-director-producer as they attempted to interview people from Shyamalan's past
According to Sci Fi, the lengthy doc contains unguarded moments as well as scenes in which the Philadelphia-based Oscar-nominee attempts to force Kahn and Greene to stop production.
Even if the Sci Fi film is no longer the intended glowing profile, it'll still be an effective promotion tool for "The Village," which opens nationwide on July 30.
