Scary question

Has there ever been a fire on the monorail?

Is there anyway to quickly evacuate the trains (especially when
they're not near any stations and the trains are high off the ground)? Is there some type of fire extinguishing system onboard?

There probably never has been one. If there was it would of been in the paper and record in disney history. Your kind of right about what would you if thier was a fire?:veryconfu JUMP? I guess.... If you can get the doors open....

Actually, there was a monorail fire in '85. I believe it started between two cars with one of the tires. An article is available from the Orlando Sentinel online but you have pay for it. From the abstract though, it looks like a few people might have had minor injuries, and the train was evacuated.

I remember that COProgress fan. I was like six at the time. But we had a newspaper clipping at one time of it. I am not sure if that is still around somewher or not? Seems to me like they said it was started by a cigarette. I am not really sure on that. But I do remember the fire. And if I remember right. The photo in the paper showed the train near the contemporary. Again I am not really sure. It was a long time ago.

You helped remind me of one more thing. There was also a ladder in the photo. One that looked like it was raised from a fire truck.

Fire!!!

Same here I have heard that there have been a couple of fires on those things...its allways been some what of a coverup with the disney high ups. They like to give away money and park tickets to those who will say that no fire has taken place

Our tour guide on the Keys to the Kingdom Tour told us of one in the 80s. Something about friction and the tires (probably the smae thing COProgressFan is talking about. If I remember correctly, he said it happened in or near Epcot and they had to evacuate by climbing out of the monorail and walking along the track (which is actually quite wide) to the Epcot station. Who knows if its true, but its an interesting story anyway.

How could the passengers walk on the monorail tracks? The tracks are high voltage, correct?

It would be scary walking on those rails due to the height on them. The tracks are quite high epecially around the Contemporary Resort.

Additionally, how would you get out of the monorail? When the doors open, there's nothing to step on when the train is not in a station.

It would be great if someone would post that article.

there is no way that disney would have allowed the passengers to walk on these tracks - wide or not.

Uhhhhh...

Uhmmm, I was under the impression that this was what the little school bus escape hatches on the ceilings were for...and there are ladders that reach the ground...As a matter of fact, I think the hatches specifically say that in the event of an emergency, open hatch and use ladder to reach the ground or something along those lines...

AS I recall, the SOP for a fire is that the driver attaches a rope to the top of the front car and helps people to rapel/slide down the nose of the train in the event of a fire. Hopefully Tyler can spread some light on this.

Concrete doesnt conduct electricity. The monorail collects the electricity from rails on the bottom of both sides of the track - which in a emergency would proberly be powered-down.

I was going to mention these escape hatches, but you beat me to it. I've noticed them at each end of the car. You would be able to get onto the roof, but I don't know what happens from then.

Well I finally found the newspaper clipping. I will post it as soon as I figure out how. Can some one help me with this?

And about the roof hatches barnum42. I am not sure if these monorail cars had the escape hatch in the roof. This happened before the instated the monorail cars we have today. These were retired in 91'. This happened back when the monorail doors were closed manually. I am sure they had some sort of escape route. However, it might not have been the roof then. As far as them getting the guest out. In the pic it shows the fire men using a "cherry picker" to get them.
