I never thought a disney park themed to a movie studio was such a good idea. It makes the rides so out of place, as though the imagineers said "we have to put Toy Story Mania in Disney World somewhere, so we'll throw it in the studios, where else could we put it?". Then look at TSM in california, fits right into the midway theme. If they could incorporate Toy Story Mania into the theme of the park, I wouldn't be complaining like an old man. But the park has no great theme, quite frankly its a labyrinth of miscellaneous "subthemes", if you will, such as the Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards looking like art deco-era Hollywood (with a random Rockin' Roller Coaster thrown into it just to grind my gears even more), then an area dedicated to city backdrops, and then a jungle of concrete buildings in the middle of it all. And then along comes an area trying to look like Andy's bedroom? Doesn't the word "random" come to mind? The two boulevard areas of the park are perfectly themed, and I wish that the whole park took inspiration from them. Unfortunately, you cannot expand that theme enough to make many different attractions out of it, let alone making it succesful. So instead of having Indiana Jones next to Star Tours next to Sounds Dangerous next to American freakin Idol, they should attempt to make a single theme these attractions can all fit into, and that would be the theme of that area. This is the idea they are hinting at with Pixar Place: a highly themed north-end of the studios with the constant theme of Pixar running through it. Imagine a full-scale Monstropolis next to a full-scale Radiator Springs next to a full-scale bug's eye land...thing. Regardless of whether its related to Hollywood or not, anything is better than what we've got now, AND it would make the park more popular. Now about that concrete jungle I was speaking of earlier...if they ARE putting Star Tours 2 in there, and if they COULD replace the Indy show with something still Indy related, why not make the rest of the area dedicated to the work of George Lucas? Disney and Lucas have collaborated before, they could do it again and come up with some great results (think Alien Encounter). The catch? Well the only big movies out there under the Lucasfilm licence right now are Star Wars and Indiana Jones, so it is probable that all the new attractions and theming in this new land would have to be directly related to these two franchises. But, the coincidence that Star Tours and the Indy Stunt show are across the street from each other is definitely something they could and should make terrific use of. As for the Muppets, they already have an area pretty much to themselves, and their theming stetches not only in their attraction, but the surrounding area as well. That being said, their area of the park either has to be made bigger, or (with tears in my eyes) be eaten by Pixar Place in order to increase the park's success. It all depends if the Muppets can manage to make a comeback or not, it seems to me like Kermit is heading from Hollywood back to the swamp. If he does stay in Hollywood, I could image a great, big, beautiful Muppetland in the park, marked by the infamous Kermit balloon.
So, could the lands of lucas, pixar, muppets, and hollywood equal the new and improved Disney Studios? I know, it still seems like a bag of bits and bites, but considering the parks biggest mistake was its creation back in '89, and considering that mistake can't be fixed, improving the theming is the best they could possibly do.
Thoughts?
P.S. There's another thread in this part of the forum titled "Disney Studios Brainstorming Refurbishment" that is was going to post this in, but I thought of it as a wee too much for a single post.
