I mean no disrespect to you Angie, but there are cancer patients everywhere. Wouldn't it make more sense to make a donation directly to the Cancer Society and/or help people in your own hometown?

I do not completely agree with link. There is a bit more to marrow donation than they would have you beleive.

Be a blood donor. Register to be a marrow donor, but most of all make an informed decision.

ive done a lot of research on donating blood and on seeing how/if your marrow is a match for other people. it depends on your opinion if you think theres a lot more to marrow donation it is a very simple procedure my dads a doctor and even he told me that as do many websites ive been to. my dads best friend recently died from this cancer and i just thought it would be nice to share the video. this is the chitchat section so i thought why not post it here. I'm not saying we have to help out christine personally but why not get tested theres no harm there.

So... what you're telling us is that you haven't actually donated blood nor have you been screened for marrow donation? So, how can you state what's involved?

I've been donating to the Virginia Blood Service for over 20 years. I currently give through a process called apheresis every month. I have been screened for marrow donatation, however I have never been called upon.

It's not an opinion, there is alot more to donating marrow as opposed to blood. You just don't walk in, sit down and give marrow. It's an involved process that will require a hospital stay. Your right, the sceening process is very easy, however, to get marrow requires drilling into bone!

My first response still stands. "Be a blood donor. Register to be a marrow donor, but most of all make an informed decision."

About 20 years ago I went to a marrow donation drive. I left before I could finish the process because there were long lines (they had a bigger crowd than expected--a good thing!) and I had to get home.

However, we were told that testing for marrow compatibility would cost $85.

Perhaps that has changed since then--I sure hope so, because cost would be a major deterrent for many people.

Giving blood, however, is free--and you get cookies.

I have an appointment for tomorrow. It will be my 98th pint.

Applause to you Yellow Shoes for all your donations!!

Here testing is free. They take a small vail for the initail screening. After you're placed in the data base, if you meet certian criteria for a possible match, they will take even more blood to analize. If after that testing you meet the criteria, then they will take a sample of marrow. If that meets the critieria, then you go in for true marrow donation. So, it's a multi-step process to ensure a viable donation. There are a great many "markers" that need to be meet in order for marrow donation and replacement to be effective.

i think people should be more educated about this topic and be given the opprotunity to donate blood by being asked at some point in their lives. its sad how majority of people only think of this when they no someone who is sick u know?
