what's the best route to take to avoid "the hood" and getting stuck in a crapton of traffic?

we want to stay on the coast as long as possible so i'm thinking inland at Santa Monica on the 10 then the 5?

Well traffic wise you will hit it no matter which way you choose unless you decide to go at an off time of day like a weekend morning. Rush hour traffic is bad in Santa Barbara, Ventura, Camarillo, and of course LA and OC.

If you truly want to stay on the coast I would take the 101 south then veer off (my recommendation is take Las Posas Road in Camarillo from the 101 to get to the 1) and take the 1 thru Malibu and Santa Monica to the 10 to the 5. As an Fyi there is a lot of road construction in Santa Monica right now.

Quickest way is the 101 south all the way thru Hollywood to the 5 south.

If you need help getting from the 101 to the 1 let me know. I grew up in Ventura County and know the area well.

The 5 through much of LA County is under construction, and most LA County freeways are a real mess regardless of construction. Once you get to Orange County though, the freeways tend to double in width and clear out markedly.

That said...

I would take PCH 1 to the 405 to the 22 and then cut up two miles on the 5 to the Disneyland exit.

If you've got your heart set on driving PCH (1) from Oxnard to Santa Monica, you can do it. It's not necessarily going to be quicker than taking 101 to 405. From Santa Monica, I would go 10 to 405 (or if you like you could continue down PCH to the little Marina Freeway (90) to the 405. From there, branch off on 22, then either head back up the 5, or just exit on Harbor and head north.

As others have said, I'd avoid the 5 through LA during most times of the day. If it's applicable, 405 has an HOV lane for I think all of the portions you might take. There's even a dedicated HOV transition to the 22 now.

Another good exercise would be to see how Google Maps would direct you during a similar day and time. You could then drag the route to some alternate roads and see what the time difference would be.

Traffic sucks all the time. Download the Waze app to your smartphone and use it to navigate. it will take you the fastest route and even reroute you as needed if anything changes. It's a life saver in the LA/OC area.

Since you'll be on freeways, there's no need to be worried about the hood. Besides, Compton has a Best Buy now. It's not like south central in the early 90's anymore.

There might be more "Compton" on Hollywood Blvd handing out they're latest mixtape/Rap demo than actual Compton nowdays (BTW, don't grab one). You can't see any of the hood when on 91 or the 105 through the hood. I had similar concerns but my reaction was "That was it?".

In June we drove as far north as Camarillo by way of Malibu. Gorgeous drive.

what about: (looking at google maps) taking 1 all the way down to where it meets 22 to the 5? What would traffic be like along that stretch?

Likely bad. Only take PCH for a huge stretch if you want to - it won't save you any time, it will make the trip longer. If time is your primary concern, use the Waze app when you leave to get the more efficient route. If time isn't an issue, then take PCH as much as you'd like.
