Penn Media Rolls Out Investor Relations Service Called I-Relate(TM)
MOKENA, IL -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 02/18/2004 -- A sign of the growing importance of communicating via email is evident by Penn Media's new service for public companies needing to communicate with their stockholders. Penn announced a new email communications service called I-Relate™.

The purpose of I-Relate™ is to enable both corporations and investor groups to communicate with shareholders of widely held stocks. This service involves identifying shareholders within Penn Media's email network of subscribers and then gaining permission for the group to communicate on an ongoing basis.

Jaffer Ali, founder and Chief Strategic Officer said, "If a proxy fight is brewing or a corporation wants to communicate with hundreds of thousands of shareholders, they can try to call them on the phone, they can send them mounds of direct mail that ends up in the garbage, or they can email them. We have developed ways to identify shareholders and get permission to communicate with them via email. It is less expensive and more effective."

Penn Media's email network was recently used by Roy Disney and Shamrock Holdings to reach and mobilize shareholders in his attempt to oust Michael Eisner in the weeks leading up to the stockholder's meeting. The campaign was called, "Save Disney."

Ali stated, "Corporate communications is a big business. Oddly, the largest corporations have been the slowest sector in adopting 21st century technologies to communicate with their stockholders. We are pleased to have our company's reach of over 50 million subscribers play a part in the connection between shareholders and companies."

Would you really consider that spam, though? They aren't being sent to completely random people....according to the article they are only being sent to shareholders.

Roy and Stan are no longer part of the Disney company. They have no right to contact Disney shareholders. Roy, Stan and Penn Media have been reported to the FTC at UCE@FTC.GOV for their violations. UCE stands for "Unsolicited Commercial E-Mail (Spam)". Roy and Stan are not nice.

Of course that have the right to contact shareholders. I think anyone with such a huge connection to Disney as Roy DISNEY, has the right to engage such tactics in his efforts to preserve his family's Company. It is hardly SPAM in my opinion, as it is targetted and the content relates to each recipient.

. . .and based on what I've seen, a heck of a lot of (most?) shareholders welcome the emails. :)

No one has complained thus far....well alteast no one but Eisner and his cronies...:animwink:

I guess the movement is much more threatening now, than it was a couple of months ago...:)

Penn Media is one of the largest spammers on the planet. They send Spam for a living. They are well known for harvesting email addresses and setting off "email bombs" in which thousands of messages are sent to the same email address. They are also well known for putting up email removal links that don't work and for making sure that people can not unsubscribe from their mailing lists. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has added Penn Media to their Consumer Sentinel database that is made available to hundreds of law enforcement and consumer protection agencies.

But, you don't have to take my word on this issue. Just type "Penn Media Spam" into Google and see what you find. Here's part of a Washington Post article from 2002 that talks about Penn Media:

How Mass E-Mail Ads Fueled a Holiday Gift Craze
By Dina ElBoghdady
Washington Post Staff Writer

"Nor is it news to mass e-mailers, the electronic equivalent of telemarketers, without the dinnertime interruption.

"Retailers get a free ride from guys like us," said John Nesbit, vice president of Chicago area Internet marketing firm Penn Media, whose business now includes buying the knockoff mini-cars from a Hong Kong factory and selling them on the Internet. Penn Media sends millions of mini-car e-mails a day. "We go out and promote the living daylights out of something and the retailers get some of that benefit."

To extend its reach further, Penn Media pays 25 contractors to send the ads to millions of e-mail addresses they have purchased from various Web sites.

One of those contractors, Steve Harper, said he has sent 5 million e-mails so far. Earlier this month, he claims he sold 330,000 cars after sending a million ads in one day."

There is one very inportant thing you forgot about Woody, Both Roy and Stan own Disney stock, as do I, And as a stock holder they as well as myself have full rights as a Stockholder to communicate with other stockholder to lobby others to there view, if such a group sizeable enough can be persuaded to demand a change for the betterment of the company as a whole as we are part owners as Stockholders,

Let me attempt to explain the situation. Roy E. Disney and Stanley P. Gold are former Board members of The Walt Disney Company. While they were still with the company, they had a legal right to view the complete list of company shareholders. Subject to the governance guidelines of the Board, they had the legal right to directly contact shareholders. However, they are no longer with The Walt Disney Company and they do not (legally) have a list of shareholders.

They have every legal right to solicit shareholders by advertising (newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, etc.) and, of course, through their Internet site www.savedisney.com. Also, they have used the press (print, TV, radio, Internet) wisely to get their message out. More power to them in this regard. Fight the good fight! I think you'll agree that they are not hard to find. So, those shareholders that wish to help in the crusade, know where and how to find them.

However, now (since they don't have a "legal" shareholder list) they have employed a known SPAM company to track down Disney shareholders and send out email solicitations. Is it legal? Well, right now it is legal. Is it unprofessional and scummy? Darn right it is! These SPAM tactics are the bottom of the barrel IMO.

If you desire to see the 6 SEC "Notice of exempt solicitation" filings by Roy E. Disney, Patricia A. Disney, Roy P. Disney, Susan Disney Lord, Abigail E. Disney, Timothy J. Disney, Shamrock Holdings, Inc., Shamrock Holdings of California, Inc. and Stanley P. Gold then check this link:

P.S. I am a shareholder too!
