Rope drop?

I keep reading about "rope drop" in the threads here, but I still haven't got a clue what that is...
Could someone explain? Thank you!

So called because years ago they used to let people into the park early where they could proceed into the park up until a certain point (the bridges of the Hub at the MK, for example) where they'd find ropes manned by CM's.

At the designated opening time they'd literally drop the rope and people would make a mad dash to their first attraction of the day. Eventually Disney wised up and altered the opening procedure and started having CM's walk people to the main attractions to keep the park opening safe and (somewhat) orderly.

not sure when exactly but since i can remember going MK was always blocked until after the celebration except for the rich folks who went to the breakfast thing

Rich folks that did the breakfast thing? Anyone can do character breakfasts.

There's a sign at the far end of the entry gates specifically for early breakfast reservations.

We had reservations at crystal palace for breakfast last year so we got in early. There were a few people milling about but not many. It's a great opportunity to get some family photos with the castle

Rope drop... reminds me of watching the opening laps of a Nascar race. As soon as the pace car leaves the track the drivers hit the gas and speed increases in a flash. Watch the CM's get out of the way before they get trampled over and watch the panicked guests scramble for prime spots in the queues.
