Rivers of light seating

You can waste a FP+ on it. Many do and I believe that's one of the only reasons why the seating area gets so full.
However, how fast the stand-by seating fills depends on the day and time of year you're visiting. If you're visiting during one of the slower periods the seating may not completely fill or fill just as the show begins. From my experience seats are typically available on the ends of the seating area up until about 10-15 minutes before show begins. If two shows are offered (not sure if this is happening in busy periods right now) the second show generally will have seats up until showtime, but the first show will fill early and fast.
The show really isn't a blockbuster hit. If you set your expectations low I think you'll enjoy it more. This also explains why seats are generally easily available within a reasonable time period before show start.

Looking like early November, there is one show showing. If I allow say 30 min before show time to get seats it I should be fine then? I know its not a block bluster but would still like to check it out, I think the little ones would love it regardless. Thanks

We were there last week at AK on a day with crowd levels of 3 (out of 10, on the touringplans scale).
Two Rivers of Light shows were scheduled. We showed up 10 minutes before the first show and easily found seats (granted, they were at the far end of the seating areas -- the center sections were pretty full at that point and CMs were guiding everybody to the end sections, although if we'd chosen to disobey them I could see seats still available in the middle that we could have snagged). When the show started, there were still open seats all around us -- I'd say the benches were, at most, 90% full.

It does not fill up that quickly. The show isn’t like Fantasmic’s lines, which are chaotic at times.
I recommend choosing what you feel comfortable doing. Keep in mind that during November, Christmas festivities start.
