Can one stay in line for the rides and not ride them? My wife has a bad back and cannot ride some attractions.

Well, just to accompany you or someone to the load area? It depends on the attraction. Spaceship earth, and most epcot attractions, except probably test track, No. Space mountain, and Haunted mansion have "chicken-exits" where you can leave towards the end of the queue. Same with ToT.

Your best option is to call Disney - 1-407-W-Disney (why they don't get an 800 number, i have no clue). Also check your guidemaps and signs on the ride.

Some ride yes and some not really... Most attractions have a way to get to the exit from the load platform, but often trying to "bail out" causes back-ups and decreases the efficiency of the loading process... Ask a greeter @ the front of the attraction for more information before everyone hops in line...
