I'm obviously new here, so I apologize if this has been covered already.
Many people have wondered about the HM Stretch Rooms and the drop in PotC.
Well, the stretch rooms in the Disneyland HM actually travel down. They do so because you then walk under the train tracks to get to the actual HM ride buidling, which is located outside the tracks. They liked the stratch room idea so much, they used them again in WDW, however, only the ceiling stretches because there was no need to lower the guests. The ride building is gigantic - and can be seen through the trees just before you enter the building - over the graves (its painted green).
As far as PotC in WDW, the drop was put in the ride to get the guests under the train tracks. If you ever take the backstage tours, you can see the PotC building, on the other side of the Parade Gates from Splash Mtn. As you're riding the train, you go through a tunnel just before the Frontierland Station. That tunnel is actually where the 2 PotC buildings meet - and the boats are going right under the tracks there.
Splash Mountain was also designed to cross the tracks 3 or 4 times. The hill in the dark where the log drops and comes back up real fast is actually just to go under the tracks. Then you go through the scenes and drop again on a short hill - again taking you outside of the park. The train goes right through the middle of the ride.
Just some interesting engineering feats i thought I'd share.
