Are there signs at the entrance to the parks that list which rides are closed for the day? I remember something like that at Disneyland years ago.

Yes there are, although, I just saw them for the Magic Kingdom, there wasn't anything posted at the International Gateway in Epcot and we never used the main entrance. And I don't recall anything at the Studios or AK... hope this helps.

Always check time boards!!!!

They are so helpful, cause then you don't have to walk to each ride to figure out what the wait is. I always check them right when I enter the park.

MK: On main street, near CASEY'S CORNER
Epcot: In FW, next to the PIN STATION.
MGM: Near the pin station, next the the reservation area on the main street. Also back somewhere in NY near one entrance to playground.

AK: Not sure

I haven't witnessed the Hat in person, but I'm fairly sure I'm going to dis-like it too! :D

Big Hint:

Read the TIMES Guide you can get when you enter the park. It lists the schedules for everything for the day and what is planned to be closed.

Tip Boards are good to save your feet from a long trek if a ride is broken down. Seeing a "Closed" on the Epcot board doesn't mean the attraction wont reopen that day possibly.

I'm going in a week - it's the second week in Sept. Are there typically a lot or rides closed during this slow period?

They do the same at Haunted Mansion when it isn't crowded either.
