Phew..Last night before I settled down for the soccer..My brother in law,who lives in Abu Dhabi in the U.A.E. and knows all about 7 star hotels, asked me why do I refer to Disney accommodation as resorts and not hotels.? My explanation was a bit vague in saying that a resort has its own restaurants and shops and pools and theming but he replied saying,so does hotels in Dubai and Abu Dhabi..???..So how would explain the difference.? Please give me a good answer as he's coming for dinner tonight..;)

A resort is a place used for recreation and relaxation attracting visitors for vacations and tourism. Resorts are places, towns or sometimes commercial establishment operated by a single company.

A hotel is an establishment that provides lodging paid on a short-term basis, a hotel can have all types of amenities however the main purpose is lodging.

After reading zurgs post, I would have to agree that hotels are for lodging on a short term basis. But to me, a resort is more laid out over more land, with much more design details, whereas a hotel is just straight up, with eeverything being contained in it. Resorts have grounds with many things to do, as do hotels, but most resorts are not highrise complexes, but under 7 floors. As for the 7 star factor, cant help you with that one at WDW.

I agree with this to. Plus anytime you are talking about disney resorts vs other hotels why stay somewhere that doesn't have the feel and magic like wdw has. Just sayin'.

I'm pulling out the big guns defintions (compliments of dictionary.com)

Hotel: a commercial establishment offering lodging to travelers and sometimes to permanent residents, and often having restaurants, meeting rooms, stores, etc., that are available to the general public.

Resort: a place to which people frequently or generally go for relaxation or pleasure, especially one providing rest and recreation facilities for vacationers

I like how the resort defintion points out the relaxation and pleasure part. But it doesn't really seem like there is a whole lot of difference to me, just semantics.

Go any love for hockey? There is the British Elite League in your neck of the woods with teams like the Edinburgh Capitals and the Dundee Stars. Just wondering what the interest level is there.
Must admit not really....I can watch the Super Bowl and enjoy it, Baseball also, but not a ice hockey fan..I have a friend living in Montreal whose son plays hockey..

I think in simple terms a resort is a much larger scale with emphasis on recreation and escape. A hotel would be smaller with emphasis on sleep. I have been to a hotel within a resort, even a resort within a resort, but not a resort within a hotel, though that might exist.

In Disneyite vocabulary.....

A hotel is a boring place where people go to sleep while on vacation. A hotel will offer clean beds, a potty and a shower. Some will offer a complimentary breakfast to entice people to stay there. Very often will be listed with a bargain price....'rooms from $59. a night'/

A resort has most of those things, but often has additional amenities including recreation, additional food options, gym...etc. Technically a resort is a hotel, the owners just charge a lot more per night!
