Resort airline check-in

If we are flying on a participating airline (not booked through disney travel), and not using DME on the return trip to MCO (we will have a rental car at that point to return), are we able to make use of the resort airline check-in service?

We haven't used DME in literally 10 years now but we always fly and always use the airline check in at the resort. It's not an issue and the two are not tied together at all. We even use them just to print off tickets without luggage to check. It's all pretty easy.

We mainly want DME on arrival to deal with all our luggage so we don't have to worry about 6 people's luggage fitting in a minivan (in theory, should fit right? But geez...my MIL thinks she needs to travel with a large suitcase for every day she's on vacuum--only a slight exaggeration). We want to send 4 people on DME and DH and I go pick up the rental and get a head start on checking us into the resort. Unless we don't have to even get on DME and just let them handle our luggage...??

What is supposed to happen is that if you don't get on the bus your luggage does not get transported to your resort. I have never heard of that actually happening though.

So if you have "reservations" on DME for 6 and only 4 get on, I shouldn't have a huge anxiety attack about all of our luggage making it to the resort?

As long as part of your group gets on the bus you should be fine. The risk is if none of your group gets on the bus.

No one has to get on the bus. We used to rent a car, but used resort airline check in all the time. We asked them, and they said that they're a remote airline service, not connected to DME and anyone who's flying a participating airline can use them. Most people seem to think that you have to be using DME though.

I figured that we were good going back to MCO from the resort not getting on the bus, but wanted to make sure we didn't have to book through disney travel (on the cruise line, you have to book through disney travel co. to take advantage of them checking your luggage directly from the ship all the way through :cautious:). But given that it'll only be 2 out of the 6 of us that won't be using DME to get to the resort from MCO (I don't want to drive the rental by myself ;)), wanted advice that we would be ok. Happy for everyone's input!!!!
