Renting DVC points

We are considering renting DVC points for our next trip. I was wondering if any of you have ever done that and if it worked out well. Also, what website did you use to rent them?? Our next trip isn't until 2021, but I can't help but start thinking about it! We will be traveling with a 2 year old, who is due is only 3 short months! It will be our first time going with children and it seems like renting DVC points is a cheaper way to stay at deluxe resorts.

I'm sure you'll get a lot of great feedback here. In my experience, it's been great! I've used DVC Rental store several times - they allow you to split your payment 50 now/ 50 later, but they might be a dollar or 2 more expensive per point compared to Davids. I've used Davids once and also had a similarly great experience. In general, I say be prepared to be patient. Depending on the resort you want, you may need to wait for an owner for months...could be just days though. I begin my requests at the 11 month out mark - I've found that owners may not be willing to rent their points this far in advance (so they minimize the amount of time they are out of cash until you submit payment) so I typically get an owner to accept my request closer to the 7 month window....just before the $ppt drops, of course. There are other factors like resort availability, and number of DVC owners/capacity of the resort. I've found this tool to be accurate in terms of checking availability - if the resort you want is available on the days you want, then it's just waiting for an owner to rent points to you, and hoping your dates do not get booked up. https://tools.dvcvacations.com/points-calculator
Hope this helps.

Congratulations BTW!

You're smart to be looking into it now, as it's not uncommon for more popular weeks, resorts and room categories to "sell out" at 11 months.

I've rented through David's Vacation Rentals (3 times now), and more recently, rented points directly from a [verified, triple-checked, reputable, able-to-offer-me-a-written-contract] owner on the MouseOwners board. (*Note: You'll want to be careful with rentals directly from an owner, as you're not protected against the consequences of fraud to the extent you would be if you rented from David's or another reputable middleman: I wouldn't recommend direct points rental to someone new to renting DVC points.) The process has been seamless, and has saved us 20-50% off of rack rack rate (it varies: you save a higher percentage off rack rate with a studio or 2-bedroom than a 1-bedroom, and more at certain resorts than others, and more at certain times of year).

The main downside is that DVC reservations are non-refundable if you cancel (although my contract with the MouseOwners member allows me one "rescheduling" if there's a medical emergency or death in the family, which is nice). For this reason, we often get vacation insurance through TravelGuard to cover the non-refundable cost.

Well said and explained. I would only add that we stayed at Old Key West last November for four nights and the overall cost was $175/night ($700 total). So, a deluxe resort for less than a moderate which was really nice. Only thing is that they have to find a match of available points that someone is selling along with availability at the resort. I use Dave's DVC as well and the trip insurance. It is very easy and they are good to work with.

I’ve rented from DVC rental store twice both times staying at AKL. It was a great experience I worked with Lindsey and she was always quick to respond to emails. They provide price quotes and availability with no upfront cost if youre on the fence I would fill out the availability form on their website there’s no strings attached to the quote if it doesn’t work out and if it does you’ll save a lot!

We have used David's once for a stay at AKL, and everything was seamless and turned out great. No issue with making my ADR's or FP's. We did not get the dining plan, which the owner has to add for you if you choose. We are currently in the queue with them for a May 2020 stay at the Boardwalk Villas. Our 11 month window opens on June 15th so we're anxiously awaiting to see what response we get!
