Renting DVC points worth it?

Hello,
I was wondering if "renting" DVC points would be worth it for my wife and I. We are looking at October. I looked at the amount of DVC points it would take to stay at AKL then and it was about the same price as staying at an All-Star. Has anyone done this before? Pros/Cons? Perks?

I thought about doing the rental thing too, problem is you have to book way in advance if you want to get a good place, usually. With not being able to cancel I just did not feel comfortable putting in over a thousand bucks and having no way out if there was reason that required a cancel.

Do they charge any other fees besides the points?
Nope.
Can you use Disney Visa Reward Dollars?
Nope.

We just used them for an upcoming October trip as well, AKL Savannah view. We were very happy with the process. Additionally, they were very helpful in securing us points for a Christmas trip too! If you can be without $90 for a couple of weeks, put in a request with Dave's and see what they can do for you. They may not have exactly what you are looking for this instant but if you give them some time to work they may be able to accommodate your request. This happened with us, they said give us two weeks to find something and within one week they sent us a confirmation that they found what we wanted. IMO, if there was a drawback it would be that there is NO cancellation. Ill say this though; they were very professional, quick to answer any question and got us what we asked for in the end. You will be able to take the confirmation number they give you and add it to your "My Disney Experience" and it shows up like most any reservation would have had you booked directly through Disney.

I never did it because there was no guarantee I'd actually get a room. It was a "Pay the money and hope you don't get screwed" kind of deal. I generally trust people, but I don't trust strangers with my money.

It is cheaper than Disney prices, though, and works out well for most people.

I went offsite, which is cheaper yet...and nicer. :)

Another thing to consider is that to book the dining plan you need to give your credit card information to the member to book for you or buy a disney gift card.. I don't think I'm comfortable giving my credit card number to a stranger

According to David's DVC Rentals' site, if you're uncomfortable giving your credit card number, you can always pre-purchase Disney gift cards and use those instead. Just an idea, if you're considering renting.

Unfortunately we are in Nova Scotia canada and I have never seen a disney gift card for sale anywhere :(

Although, just now priced out POR and it was $1061...and only sleeps 4.
Offsite condo! 2, 3, 4 bedrooms...for less than the cost of a Disney Mod. The space is really nice to have have! So much more relaxing.

If you love the bubble, by all means stay in the bubble!! I get that!

Just some food for thought there. :)

We've rented a 3 bedroom condo (with sleeper sofa too), 2 1/2 baths, private hot tub, kitchen, laundry room for roughly half of that.

We're renting for the first time this year through David's. We can't make the request until early June, but I'll let you know how it goes.
Just remember that they aren't guaranteeing you a room for the money. If you get screwed, they'll help you and assist you and probably say all kinds of sympathetic things. But if you get there and have no room and must pay again for another room, what they won't do is give you back your money.

I think those places try to down-play the fact that they're really doing nothing you couldn't do yourself on ebay.

I'm sure you thought of all this are and are confident. I just didn't find out until I was moving along with it and want to make sure other people know more than I did (and know it sooner.)

What happened with your transaction? I was under the impression that after you're booked, you get a confirmation number and are able to look up the details yourself to make sure that the reservation has been made. Also, if the owner were to try something shady (like canceling at the last minute), the contract does provide a means of legal recourse. I realize it would still be a hassle, but DH and I are attorneys, so I guess the idea of having to take legal action doesn't worry us overmuch. ;)

Never done it. A bit leery of it!:(
I was too...until I just decided to give it a try...I'm glad I did...until I decide I want to 'buy' my own DVC,this is the way to go. We use dvcrentalstore and have not had a problem. In fact, I can e-mail them questions anytime and they're usually answered within 20 minutes. Also, they checked availability at 11 mos. and didn't have what I wanted; tried again at 7 mos. and had the exact resort and accommodations each time.

We have rented several times through individual DVC members. Most will provide references and a contract. I was uneasy at first as well, but everything has always worked out. Once they make the reservation for you they send you the confirmation number. You can enter it under your own My Disney Experience account and it will show up with all of the details. Everything is completely in your name and you can track the reservation. Just be aware that you won't be able to make changes on the reservation.

There are definitely pros and cons, but for us......it works! :)

We rented points for a 2 night stay at WLV in May of last year. We had originally booked a regular room at WL and renting points for a studio room at WLV saved us $140. We are renting points for a 3 nights stay at BLT in September and we are paying $219 a night for a standard studio view. Could we stay cheaper at a value? Of course. But we want to try something different. We compared moderates and renting points and a moderate would have been more expensive than renting points by quite a bit. We had a great experience renting the points before. The only issue is once it's paid for it's non-refundable. That is the one thing I don't like about renting but it's a chance you take if you want to save money!!

This is who we go through too and I believe this is the only site that allows for a deposit to be made and then the balance to be paid 45 days prior to check in. All the other sites require the full payment up front. We've always had good luck with them :)

Rent every year from the same person. We got Kidani Village for under $1,000 for a studio for a week. Next year we will be renting a studio at the Beach Club for $1160 approx. For a week. The answer is, yes you can save BIG bucks. You can basically get Delxue for the price of Value. Just make you trust the source you rent from. We rent direct from owner and pay $10-11 per point.
