Renting a car 3/17-3/24 2013 Spring Break

I know this is a popular subject with many other posts however I wanted to get a recent consensus on the subject considering our Royal Caribbean cruise plans.

We are staying at Disney's Animal Kingdom DVC one bedroom Villa ,,, standard view ;-( ,,, from 3/17 to 3/24 and will need to get to Royal Caribbean Cruise Port at Port Canaveral on 3/24 and return to MCO on 3/31.

Rates for a private car to the port are around $200. A cab is unpredictable and I am told will be more than $150 not including toll fees. A limo is $325.

Rental car rates average around $400 for an economy car and then you have gas and parking headaches. Plus our birthday boy (14 to be) wants to go to Universal Studios.

Complicate all that with our first trip to WDW during Spring Break. We are getting "LOST" in all the planning.

Very perplexing... It would sure be nice if getting to the cruise port were made easier.

I did find this Spring Break "kids out of school" statistics chart which is a little reassuring for our dates at WDW being right at the lull of the crowd during Spring Break.

Unsure if 2013 will be similar. DVC is fully booked for all resorts so we are expecting heavy crowds. This is only our second trip to WDW; the last one was ten years ago and in hot! August.

Thx in advance for any advice offered...

I'll also be at AKL in a studio during that same week. :)

How long would you rent the car for? When my FIL was looking at rates to reserve our rental car, I think it was less than three hundred for the whole week. If you rent it just for the trip down I imagine it would be much cheaper.

I am not familiar with public transportation in FL. Have you considered a bus?

Nice! :)

We have looked at buses but it gets complicated. They all seem to end up at MCO where we would transfer to a shuttle; rather risky when on a strict schedule and packing an abundance of luggage around. Transportation between the cruise ports and WDW could certainly use some attention.

Right now we are still tossing about on renting a car or hiring a private sedan. The price is about the same and I don't think we will end up using the car for anything other than a possible trip to Universal Studios. Too much for one trip. Besides, I really could use a break from driving & parking.
