Has anyone bought anything from the refurbished section of the Canon website? Curious to hear any experiences good or bad...

Thanks!

Refurbed items always scare me. There is a reason why they end up in that position, customer returns, warranty returns. I am skeptical, and often think that a lot of the issues with returned items are never properly addressed and they are pushed back out for sale. I guess it would depend how good of a deal it is, but for me, I would rather wait a bit longer to save for the full new versions VS the refurb.

I guess for me it it the case of not knowing its history. Was it defective, had intermittent issues, returned. If it was returned, was it smashed around during the return process or when it was with the owner. Who knows?

That's the issue for me too. This will be my first more expensive lens purchase, and I'm NOT going to buy brand new, as getting the refurbished model would save me almost $300. I'm not ready to spend that kind of money just yet.

I'm looking at the Canon 10-22mm vs. the Tokina 11-16mm for a Canon T3i, FWIW. The Canon refurb is about $15 cheaper than the brand new Tokina. Also, the Canon refurb has a 90-day warranty, where the Tokina has a 3-year warranty, comes with a hood and is faster (f/2.8 vs. f/3.5-4.5 on the Canon)...

So I think I know which one is the better buy, just wanted some opinions, especially on the refurb aspect. :)

I've got the 10-22 - love it. Great lens. That extra 1mm on the wide end doesn't sound a lot, but in use it is. I've had bad experiences with third party lenses an auto-focussing. If you look at reviews it seems to be a fairly common issue. I've never had a problem with Canon lenses.

So that's my dilemma...get a refurbed Canon 10-22mm lens or a brand-new Tokina 11-16mm? Maybe I need to start a new thread. :)

For me it depends on the price reduction.. because for most refurbs you do not get a warranty that is as long as on a new product... so I would be hesitant on something more likely to have a problem like a camera than I would on a lens. On Canon you only get 90 days for a refurbed camera versus 12 month on a new one. I think you'll find that is fairly standard with all camera manufacturers. The only refurbed item I've ever bought was a flash... If I could do it over again I wouldn't have done it... the saving wasn't worth the fact that after about 6 months the flash started acting up randomly... had it been new I could have gotten it fixed, as it is I have one flash that will work 90% of the time but will randomly fail to fire no matter what camera it is attached to.... At this point I would probably only consider a manual focus lens... every other thing has too many electronic parts that could have be suffering from gremlins... Would be more likely to buy used than refurbed.

The warranty is a big issue for me. You're right, it's 90 days vs. 1 year for the new lens. Buying refurbished would save me about $150 but I'm not sure if it's worth the potential headaches if the lens craps out after 6 months...

I have a couple refurb lenses and I have never had an issue. As far as the warranty (for me anyway) I have never had to use one for my camera equipment.

Silly question, but do you have any LOCAL camera shops that sell used lenses? From my past experiences, they usually have better prices AND better "warranty" on the items you can snag.

Thanks. I know they go through quality checks/repairs, so that along with hearing about good experiences makes me feel better.

Not silly at all...thanks for bringing this up. I do have a local place about 5 minutes away that I totally forgot about. :) I don't know if they sell used but it's definitely worth a visit. Thanks!

My T3 is a refurb that I got from Cameta Camera. Absolutely LOVE IT!!! No nothing wrong with it. A month ago, I bought a refurbed 55-250 IS for it on Adorama (thank you to those of you who directed me there!!!) and the pics are flawless. The new lens got plenty of use at the Flyers game last week and the pics are stunning.

So I would encourage you to shop around (not so much Amazon), but Cameta, Adorama, and other sites have great deals on refurbed stuff and the prices are pretty competitive so you usually can win vs the Canon site.

Depending on where you get your equipment, there are places (Cameta Camera) who stand behind their products so much that they give you a 1 year warranty through THEM in addition to the manufacturer.

Okay, you have bought 2 refurbed items I've bought 1. You had no issues and I have had 1, so that means based on the only empirical data we have there is a 33% chance that your refurbed item will crap out when it is out of warranty... If anyone else out there has had experience feel free to chime in, maybe we can put together a more realistic view of the true odds of getting a good/bad refurb.
