Reflections of Spaceship Earth

No, i did not ride the attraction.

Will i? I don't really know at this point, but I don't think i'm going to make it a priority.

My butt hurts and i'm cranky about not being let on. I spent 4 hours camped outside of SSE. That really short music loop, which yesterday was awesome, today got very annoying very quickly. I can see the SSE CM's losing their cool with it in a few days.

Just to clarify.. why i'm cranky.. I learned a lot about the imagineers, management, and CM's working at Spaceship Earth by sitting there quietly and hearing their conversations. A good lot of stuff I didn't want to know.

Lots of fighting. Lots of it. Maybe it's better called "bickering" because fighting implies fists, but these were full-on verbal spats between people in the walkways of Epcot. C'mon folks, you're "on stage." If anything, let this thread serve as a reminder to all of those folks at SSE today: YOU ARE ON STAGE. GUESTS HAVE EARS!

Other stuff i learned: There's 1 manager dude who says if people get on the ride. One CM at SSE worked with him at Test Track and "he's strict." There's apparently someone from Paris (France?) who wanted to ride but couldn't who had to get his permission to do so, they talked, i think the answer was no. There's another CM at SSE who thinks my camera will be confiscated and taken to guest relations if i take a picture through a crack in the wall, that Disney is protecting its image and the photos could prove to be damaging and they'd make me erase those. There are imagineers/managers who met up with a forum-member (someone who led the Epcot 25 effort) and granted him a tour, including a photo-op at the entrance of the ride, while the rabble such as myself waited outside. There are several imagineers who did not bother to shave today, or tuck their shirts in, or do their hair - nor cut it above their collar. There's a guy who works for ETC or atleast wore an ETC shirt, so there's probably some source 4's inside of Spaceship Earth. The doors on the refurbs walls don't lock, and the padlocks on the ones in post-show are never actually locked and at one point in the day actually fell off. Several CM's enjoy opening those doors to show guests (their choice) what's behind the walls, both in the postshow and at the front of the attraction. Imagineers like to have long winded meetings in the queue of the ride while the rabble waits outside. Imagineering tends to walk into and out of SSE through the west door at the entrance and then over to the backstage gate by the lockers. Sometimes they carry parts of the ride. Maintenance apparently had the attraction until 6pm, and then it would open if possible, but Imagineering didn't leave until 8pm and it had all kinds of issues.

Oh, and doors to the offices/lounge/etc can be held open by tying the handle to something with an old velvet stanchion rope.

Also, though the ride was cycling for over an hour, no one was allowed to ride, except maybe the person given the tour.

Four hours camped outside Spaceship Earth? My, I even I don't have that kind of time. Many of us have no stupid clue why you don't just work for Disney. You might as well get paid for being at Epcot for all the time you spend there. It would also be interesting to hear your perspective on cast members after you have worked with them for at least a year. It would be interesting to see how it might change, one way or the other way.

As I'm sure you're aware, WDI doesn't have a dress code like park CMs. So they can get by looking like hippies because they're "free spirits."

But Merf, don't pout because you didn't get to ride today. You choose how you spend your time. Just think how excited you were Thursday when you posted numerous messages about people riding SSE!! And now you're so sad. :(

It's like the Mexico delay, part II. Remember how mad some people got because Gran Fiesta opened like 2 days later than advertised?

SSE isn't scheduled to reopen until Feb. And based on the reviews yesterday, it still needs some work on the descent.

Wow.... that didn't sound like a good experience at all. You definitely have a knack for making observations. It might be better that you didn't get on the ride, because it doesn't sound like SSE is operating so well right now. Getting on it this early might've been a bad enough experience to spoil it for you in the long run.

I've been thinking about what inspired me to post this..

I listened to Lilly Allen's song "LDN" on the way to Epcot today, perhaps that was the influence.

I actually get were he's coming from based on every word he wrote and some that he didn't.

I can relate to the experience in the moment.

You'll feel better before long Merf, about that day in particular, even though certain images will stick with you. It's all just another form of education. Life can be fun that way.

Don't let it sour you on riding SSE before it's ready, try try again, it'll be worth the experience.

This is why Disney shouldn't even have soft openings. I realize ypou are upset about not being able to get on SSE today, but it IS a soft opening and and riding is not always guaranteed. There were obviously problems with the ride, and understandably so. Its still under construction, and could be until February. Imagineers and CMs are people, too, just like you. And they make mistakes, even at work in WDW. While we all love it so much, we ahve to accept that our favorite brand of magic exists in this thing called reality, and in reality, nothing is perfect. A problem with the ride probably caused the fighting, and is probably the same reason there were no previews today. Disney still has to maintin show quality, lest there be too many lukewarm Internet reviews by fans who've counted the chickens before they've all hatched.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but nothing, even in disney, is perfect. Don't let it color your riding of SSE in the future. Just keep moving forward.;)

spaceship Earth is advertised to reopen February 15, 2008. Today is December 8, 2007. This is two months, not two days. Its a little different.

This doesn't shock me. These rules, especially hair length, are not enforced much with the imagineers, or any of the creative departments in the company. Because they're artists, they are allowed to be more free.

I'm usually 100% on board with merf's posts and point of view. With that said I never really understood the signifigance of shaving and/or having a short haircut. To me, these days you can have long hair and some stubble and still be presentable. People have a right to express themselves with whatever look or style they feel comfortable with. If you are saying they were unshowered and really sloppy I suppose that is a different story, but still, I don't see what a haircut has to do with the ability to do one's job. I have had long and short hair, been clean shaven, fully bearded, had the whole george michael stubble thing and currently have a goatee, however I would never consider myself unpresentable just because I didn't have a cookie cutter haircut styled in a certain way that appeals to the masses.

Awwww...Poor Merf.

Still, your in WDW.Even though you are there everyday it's still something to be very happy(and privileged) about. As for SSE...I say wait it out.I'm waiting to see SSE next summer so I can see it and be wowed and emotional in person, not in front of a monitor in some library.I say wait untill SSE is all done and the ride.Sure it's cool to see it n the planning stages but the finished product will be SO much better.

Feel better.:animwink:

That was my point. The ride wasn't "supposed" to be open yesterday and technically not until Feb.

And I agree with you about soft openings. In this day with internet reviews so easy to disseminate, soft openings shouldn't be held until ride and effects are 100% complete.

Also, just because someone is wearing a WDI hardhat doesn't make them an Imagineer. It just means a lot of them are contractors hired by WDI to do a certain project, so most of them are on the project team but not Disney Employees, so they really don't have a dress code, but they should have at least while they are working on the project. When the project is over, then they are gone.

I know there's some ambiguity, like the ETC guy and some of the other labor folks, but a blue badge and a Disney nametag slung haphazardly from a lanyard tends to point to WDI.

I think some people are missing the point that WDI doesn't have a dress code. And "Disney Look" doesn't apply to them at all. I mean, how do you think Joe Rhode gets away with all those funky earrings? Let a frontline CM try that and see what happens. It's not fair, but that's Disney for you.

I think it's cool. Many of the immagineers are the artsy type. Let them dress and accessorize how they like, it matches their creative genius.
