Record Attendance last week

Universal Orlando recently enjoyed several days of record admissions, another sign that Central Florida's tourism industry is rebounding. Daily attendance at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure rose to record levels six times in one week during the middle of last month, Universal said. That jibes with a recent report commissioned by the Orlando/Orange County Convention & Visitors Bureau Inc. that predicted that 46.9 million people will visit Orlando in 2004, a 6.3 percent increase.

Anyone know how this measures up when comparing with disney. I mean, disney often has to close the gates because they've reached capacity. Can the Univeral Parks just hold that many more people?

Universal is a very large park in terms of capacity. IOA...not so big.

Last week was way up throughout the city. All six of the hotels I work with had great occupancy, esp considering we are entering a slower period of time.

I don't know exactly what the old records Universal claims they broke were or what Disney's records have been in the past, but Universal was not alone in a booming spring break. In fact, according to a recent associated press article, attendance at the Walt Disney World resort has been up 15% in the fiscal quarter ending March 31st, compared to the same time last year. Basically, the entire tourism industry in Orlando is booming once again and Spring Break was a killer for the entire area. I know Disney broke attendance records at virtually all their parks over the most recent Christmas holiday, so I don't know how much higher they would have to reach to break them again. I do know that MK and AK closed due to capacity on a number of days during the Spring Break season and on a number of days every room at Disney's 22(?) resorts were completely booked, even with the recent addition of Pop Century....the largest resort in terms of the numbers of rooms in the entire region.

Assuming all of the available rooms are being used, Phase 1 of Pop Century, the Classic Years, has 2,880 rooms according to the press releases when it opened. When Phase 2 is completed the entire resort will have 5,760 rooms.

Riverside now has 2,048 rooms and Caribbean Beach has 2,112 guest rooms, making Pop Century the biggest resort in terms of room numbers not only at Disney World but the entire region.

That's right...my bad.

I disagree on your choice of words. Pop Century is the largest motel in Orlando...although themed.

 It might have "motel" qualities (especially the outside corridors to the rooms), but for overall feel, layout and service, its a resort, mind you a "value" resort ;).
Anyways, sorry for this thread drift......my only point was that the entire Orlando area is booming as is evidenced by record attendance at all the theme parks, including what had to be a record "resort" attendance at Disney as they were able to fill up all of their rooms even with the addition of the 2,880 rooms at Pop Century (which surprisingly has more rooms than all three of Universal's hotels combined....mind you they are much smaller and less extragavant than these rooms though)
