Quick question: what are e-tickets?

So I've seen several posts around here about e-tickets. I honestly have no idea what they are, or when they started. I'm just curious, what are they exactly? Chances are I've known about them and have just been calling them something else, but would like to know what they officially are.

E-Tickets were actual coupons used for E-Rides which by definition just meant the ride experience was more technologically advanced back when the Magic Kingdom opened in 1971.
Since then the Mouse has stopped using the ticket books to get on rides and the term E-Ticket stuck to explain the ride experience.

E-Ticket was/is the term used for the most popular rides. I'm not sure when it ended, but it used to be to get on these rides you would have to use your 'e-ticket' from your ticket booklet which included tickets from a-e (a being least popular, up to e which was most popular).

Essentially E-Ticket rides would be things like Soarin', Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, popular rides. Hopefully that helps a little. I'm sure there are more qualified people on here to answer!

E-Tickets and Attractions

Here is a list of what the coupons/tickets covered by rating (A-E):

Given how attractions have become more sophisticated or thrill-ride oriented, the E-ticket designation is perhaps a misnomer for some newer attractions. Either that, or some attractions should be downrated to a "D" level as some attractions were in the past.

For example, many are describing the new Little Mermaid attraction as a D-Ticket attraction, and how it does not compare to the Haunted Mansion as an E-Ticket experience. From the video of the attraction that seems unfair--it looks like an E-Ticket ride to me compared to how Disney classified attractions in the past with the coupons/tickets (see the link above).

Perhaps we are coming to associate E-Ticket rides with just thrill-level rides, which is not really how Disney used the coupons/tickets in the past to describe attractions.

From my 2003 guidebook:
The phrase "E-ticket ride" comes from the times back when tickets were used at Disney Parks. E-tickets were saved for the most exciting rides of all.
