Questions about planning a day at KSC during upcoming Vero Beach trip

We are planning on visiting Kennedy Space Center one day on our upcoming trip to Disney's Vero Beach Resort.

Would you suggest we do one of the guided tours...and if so, which one? Or should we just wander around on our own? If you do not think we should do a tour, which areas should we make sure to visit? After looking at the website, it looks like there is quite a bit to do there. We will have a four year old and seven year old with us.

I live near the space center and I would suggest to wonder around on your own. The bus tour is really neat as far as seeing launch pads BUT small children can get very bored sitting on a bus for long periods of time. I say walk around, check everything out and then decide whether you want to take the bus tour. My daughter is 10 1/2 and I still haven't taken her on it yet.

I would say the bus tours are absolutely essential and by far the best part of the experience (but I havnt done it with kids_. Without the tours, there really isnt a heck of a lot of stuff to do, and you really miss out on all the knowledge that the tours give you.

I woulds say the History one is probably not the best for kids, so I would go with the Up Close.
