Question about upgrading PH to AP (dates)

Hi everyone, I’m considering a Premiwr passport this fall, because I have 2 trips to WDW planned and also Disneyland during a 365 day period, and considering a third to WDW.

My question is this, if you upgrade a Park Hopper ticket to an AP, is the start date of the AP the day you purchase the upgrade, or the first day you used the PH?

Thanks, that’s what I figured (otherwise it would be “free days”, right?), but wasn’t 100% sure.
