Question about Tower of Terror

Hey all.

I will be going on my second full vacation to WDW in a little over two weeks. Now, the last time I went on a real vacation to WDW, I was six. and it was 1993. I have since been back once, and only for a day at the Magic Kingdom, while I was visiting a family friend in Florida.

Due to my last vacation being in 1993, I have never been to a MGM Studios where Tower of Terror was in existance. (They hadn't even started construction at this point) but I grew up knowing about it, due to constant exposure to all things Disney. I've always wanted to go on the ride, and yet...I don't. I am deathly afraid of heights, and I wish to face my fears on Tower of Terror, but I have a question. I know they took away lapbars, but is there anything to hold on to? I know I am going to want to hold onto something. I had heard they had something, but I've never head a straight answer.

So I figured I'd ask the experts, you wonderful folk here at WDWMagic! :)

You are strapped in with a seat belt. There are hand holds in the area of where your thighs would be.

If you imagine sitting in a chair they are mid thigh, maybe a little higher.

There are seat belts that go across your lap and then each row of seats had a railing in front of it, but that may be too far away to actually hold on to, I don't quite remember. Best thing to do is to hold on to the people beside you:ROFLOL:

And make sure you go on it twice. The first to ease your nerves and the second so you can keep your eyes open and take in the amazing view!

You will have fun.
You will want to ride it again after your first immersion.

My wife sometimes grabs onto me, like that's going to help since I'm fallling also.

I'm terrified of heights and falling, as well. I've ridden it twice, and I'm so glad I did. It took everything I had to get on it, but I did it (and I'll do it again)! You should try it, you'll be proud of yourself.

The first time, I clung to my husband's arm and gave him a bruise. The second time, I held the little hand rails next to the seat, and didn't let go until the doors opened and I saw the CM standing there.

Believe me, if I can do it, you can do it too. (Just as a kind of gross aside to let you know that I truly am terrified of heights -- my hands and feet are starting to perspire as I think about riding it and type this post. ick.)

I didn't ride ToT for so long because I don't like the freefalling feeling or scary rides. However, my 9 year old rode it with his dad this time and begged me to go on. I was so nervous at first, but absolutely loved it. It feels more like a bungee swing than a freefall. Make yourself do it! I promise that you will not regret it!

It's like nothing you will ever experience anywhere else. A free fall in the dark is more frightening than in broad daylight IMO. Don't get me wrong, like the other outside "drop zones" you will get a quick glimpse to see how high you are but for the most part you are falling in pitch blackness, which I find more terrifying

Thanks for all the information!

Truth be told, I have no intention of skipping this ride despite my fear of heights, because my family is basically determined to get me to ride this and Everest (which is funny. They think I'm afraid of Everest, but jokes on them, I'm dying to ride that one) and honestly, the experience of the queue plus the ride make it a must-see.

Basically I just wanted to make sure there were some "Oh, Crap!" handles as it were, because I know I am going to freak a bit when the tower drops.

You'll have tons of fun. Make sure when you come back to show us pictures and write a trip report.

(italics and bold mine)

Yes. For your safety, please remove your thighs and place them in the storage pouch beneath your seat. It's in correspondance with a new OSHA regulation. :lookaroun
