so i was reading someone's trip report and they said you can't get a fastpass for Radiator Springs Racers unless you are staying at one of the Disneyland hotels. is that true?

No, they were most likely referring to the fact that staying at the Disneyland Hotels gives extra morning hours for the parks on alternating days. This makes it easier to be in the front of the line to get fastpasses for RSR. FPs for RSR do seem to still be going incredibly fast, and will probably require you to line up for those first thing in the morning when the park opens (probably even need to be at the entrance at least 30 minutes prior to park opening to get a good spot).

I've used single rider to ride my last couple visits, and I think the last time I tried for FPs was back in January. Single rider line is a good option if you don't mind splitting up or don't have little kids.

You definately have to get there early for a fast pass. We were happy to get one at 11:30 one day, and it was for a 3:30 return. If you don't have small kids and don't mind being separated single rider is the way to go.
