This is a very difficult question to answer. It all depends on a multitude of factors. Frankly, it is a question that cannot be definitively answered.

You must consider the ride system, time of day, location of the ride in the park, the weather, if it is early entry day, so on and so forth...

Is this your first time to WDW?

ride times

I was just at WDW on President's Day weekend, a very VERY crowded weekend. Popular rides seemed to be posted around 30-4o minutes wait; however, for those where we waiting in line, we often found the actual wait was shorter. Those posetd at 30-35 min tended to have a 20-25 minute wait.
We visited Philarmagic twice with no wait, both times at night around the time of Spectromagic. Buzz Lightyear 1st thing at early opening, 5 -10 min wait. M:S at park opening, 15 min wait. Use your fast pass as much as you can. As soon as you are eligible for another fast pass, try to get one.
On early opening at MK we fast-passed Space Mountain, rode Buzz Lightyear right away. At MGM we fast passed RocknRollerCoaster and then got in line for StarTours, about a 25 minute wait in late morning.
Afternoons in MK were a zoo on this weekend, just leave the park at that point and return in the evening. People with little kids tend to leave right after Wishes and this really helps. MGM doesnlt get crowded quite as quickly and the stroller crowd tends to stay in certain areas of the park.
Be at Epcot right when it opens (what a zoo) to do TestTrack and M:S (fastpass one and ride the other after waiting) Wait in the singles line for M:S, it's shorter.

If you only Fastpass two attractions on your whole trip make sure they are Test Track and Splash. Being a Splash CM I know just how bad our Standby line is. And Test Tracks Standby can just stand still for long periods of time.

Well, when I was at WDW this past July all of those rides had lines that were over an hour for the most part. The day we were at MK in the afternoon, Space Mt, Splash Mt, Big Thunder all were 120 mins. -Stephanie

When you fastpass, are you relegated to a specific seat or can you sit anywhere on the ride?

All I'm trying to say is that there are some rides where fastpass works and some where it doesn't. On some rides the Standbye line will keep moving steadily regardless of FP and some lines just don't move at all. We've had days at Splash where people wait an hour longer than the posted wait time because we just can't keep the FP line clear and keep Standbye moving.

I agree with what you said.....both Splash and TT REQUIRE fast pass.

I wouldn't fastpass M:S. It is an extremely efficient ride system....
