Question about Pirates of the Carribean

Just got back from seeing the movie. Awesome to say the least. One question that they answered, but I didn't hear was why Jonny Depp's character acted the funny way he did.
It was explained to Will as he was about to set sail with the new crew to chase the Black Pearl.
Did anyone catch the reason why?

The legend was that he went a little "mad" while marooned on an island by the mutineers. Later on in the story we find out that his stay on the island was not as long as the legend said. So there really is no explantion in the movie.

I thought that Johnny Depp's portrayal of Jack Sparrow was the real reason the movie was so ggod. His portrayal was right on the line between showing how mad Sparrow was and how smart he was. If he leaned the portrayal towrds the mad side he woudl have been too comicbook like. Too much to the smart side and the story would not have had its punch.

Great movie - All should see it.

I guess we will leave his manurisms (sp) as part of his character and the way he spoke as a result of his capped teeth. He did play the part wonderfully.

Not sure if anyone else did, but I stayed until the end of the credits (about 10 minutes) to catch the final scene.

All in all, that was alot of action in 2 and a half hours.

Thanks for the reply!

Favorite fantasy line:

Jack: "You're a pirate, Will."

Saw Johnny Depp on Letterman - he still had his gold capped teeth because he forgot to get them reversed before he got on the plane to NY for the Late Night shoot. He was funny on the show. Hope you caught it.
