okay, so here is the deal.

i have a digital camera, i like to take the pictures on at least 3 megapixels, BUT i hate how big they are on the computer when i want to post them. When i move back to WDW i will want to take a lot of pics to send home via e-mail, but i also want them to be high in megapixels for good developing? is there a way to take a high resolution picture for developing but make it smaller on the computer without distorting it? thanks in advance! - Josh

I do that all the time. You can do it with Microsoft Photo Editor if you have it. Just go to "images", then "resize" and you can change it there. Then save it with "save as" and give it a different name so you don´t loose the original one. :)

Sometimes when resizing to a smaller size, the picture will become a bit blury (not as clear as the original). I usually use the "sharpen" image option after resizing a picture.

In Photoshop select Image>Image Size...

In the Image Size dialog box make sure that "resample Image" is selected and then change the "Pixel Dimensions" to the desired size. For e-mail I usually set the larger value to 500 pixels.

After resizing go to Filter>Sharpen>Unsharp Mask...

Here i usually set the amount to 50% ans the Radius between .5 and .8 pixels. Leave the Threshold at 0 levels. This will make the picture look a bit crisper than it does after resizing. Be careful with this feature. If you oversharpen your images you will start to see a weird halo forming around all the subjects in the picture.

Then save the file under a different name. I prefer to do this by selecting File>Save For Web... and setting the file type to JPEG. This will allow you to preview how large the file will be and how it will look after it is compressed. It helps me to get the smallest possible file size without comprimising the appearance of the image.
