Well the funny thing is...the original "future scene" wasn't even supposed to be futuristic at all. It actually was supposed to be "today". Actually all of them are supposed to be "today" and were except for the current ending.
One must remember that the original CoP script is like a 20 minute GE commercial. Though forms of it are still used in the current 1994 version, I must say I think the 1994 version sucks when compared to the elegant orchestral music, and optimisitc approach to the original CoP.
Now understand this: The Carousel family DOES NOT age 100 years. They are meant to show a typical american family ala walt disney style. They REPRESENT what a family would be going through during that time period via electroncis and other products on a humurous note. While we the audeince see vast progression, the carousel family is only getting older by 3-5 years with every scene.
The original ending occured around Christmas 1960-1963
It was Christmas Night and Mother and Father were all dressed up a bit preparing for Christmas dinner. Orville and the Children (who both are old enough to drive by now) have gone to get Grandma and Grandpa at the town/small cities newly constructed airport. Grandma and Grandpa now live away in a retirement community.
From our viewing left we see a green and formeica contemporary kitchen :hammer: with Rover sitting on the kitchen floor.
In our viewing center is the living room. Father is on our left in a chair. and Mother is on our right sitting on a couch with the family Cat.
To our viewing right is the x-mas tree, color TV, and dining room.
A much upbeat and chearful ending is presented to the audience, ensuring tomorrow is a dream but today is truly a beauitful technological experience.
The audience then enters GE's nuclear power demonstration in 1964-65
In 1967 the post show was a 4 minute EPCOT Model futuristic approach.
In 1975 the finale was completely redone to x-mas in the 70s. This scene was cosmetically redone in 1981 for x-mas in the 80s. And in 1994 was redone to be x-mas in the year 2000. Because of this the scene has outdated features. But the set and its layout are mostly the same as it began at WDW in 1975.
In my opinion the CoP should have an overhaul. I don't care if the show is still presented in the "wrong direction" LOL. But even if a new cast is hired they should read from a very close script of the 1964 version. And that ending should come back. Tomorrowland is no longer about the future. But if a new 4 minute pre show can be presented by the metro historical society and better tell why it ends in the 1960s, I think guests will be far better emmersed in a great big beautiful attraction!
Here is a link to a picture of the 1967 ending of the CoP. It was extremely similar to the 1964 ending, though the backdrop of suburbia was now EPCOT and some appliances were updated. Enjoy!
