Is it mandatory for imagineers to live in California? How often do they travel?

From what I've found you would have to live in or near Lake Nona, Florida. Once the construction is done on their new headquarters.

No and depends wildly based on job.
Walt Disney Imagineering is at the beginning of relocating its primary base of operations from California to Florida but jobs focused on California and Asia will stay in California. Each resort also has its own local Imagineering Field Office responsible for smaller projects at that resort.
