I'm just curious what the file extensions are for Windows Quark Files. I have a ton that I'm moving over from a Mac and I'd like to rename them all, since it's being really temperamental as to which it opens

.qxd :)

Just make sure you have the right fonts for everything on the PC or they won’t open right (Quark will try to substitute and it will screw everything up most times)…

Ohhh so is that way we always have problems with Quark on the Macs in the newspaper office when I was on the Daily Bruin staff?

Quark is a pain in the neck. I like Pagemaker for layout stuff :) (even though I dont' think it's made anymore lol).

Sorry.. just thought I'd add in my two cents :).

I haven't found a free one yet, but there's a program called CrossFont that costs like $50 that will convert fonts between the 2 platforms.

Just out of curiosity, are you using it for a class or for actual publishing? :)

WOOHOO.. Actually I used to HATE Illustrator because the program is so complicated and it takes FOREVER to draw a simple straight line... then I realized how to use the program LOL. You can do some really cool things in Illustrator :).

I think everyone hates Illustrator the first time they use it. There is no real world counterpart for it. I mean, Photoshop was designed in such a way that it sort of mimics the techniques that photographers would actually use to retouch photos by hand and has metaphors which most can relate to but with vector artwork they sort of started from scratch....

Nobody likes the pen tool till they understand how to use it. Once that "ah-ha!" moment happens (something that can't really be taught or explained well) it becomes your best friend, you even understand why it is in Photoshop then. :)

Dan, glad to see I'm not the only person on earth who actively uses Streamline... I sort of thought everyone (Adobe included) had forgotten about that little program. :)

I sort of wonder why it hasn't been incorporated or bundled with Illustrator. If they were implement the features of it in Illustrator and advertise it as a new feature I bet a lot more people would start using it but then again, one of the best qualities about it is that it is a simple little program. Oh well.

Streamline? It converts bitmaped images into editable vector artwork. Depending on how it is used, it can create interesting artistic effects or it can be HIGHLY productive in the process of recreating line art/illustrations into editable vector artwork - as in, you draw something with pen and ink, scan it it, and convert it to an editable illustrator file. The same can be done with logo's and many other types of illustrations. It isn't a perfect automated end all solution. Just about everything that goes through it requires further editing in a program such as Illustrator but it can cut production time by a CONSIDERABLE degree when used properly. :)

Sorry, I thought you already knew about this kind of stuff from what you were saying about Quark and Illustrator. :)

To put it more simply, it takes files you would normally edit in Photoshop and turns them into files that you would normally edit in Illustrator. Since you have worked with illustrator, I’m pretty sure you understand how drastic the difference between the kind of files Illustrator and Photoshop handle are.. They can both do a little of what the other does to some degree these days but that is another discussion all together. :)

Most people on a Disney site probably think we are talking about the Dog from Honey I shrunk the Audience when they see us talking about "Quark" ;)

a bit of both... I find ways to use my actual stuff for a grade. Unfortunately, I have a professor who insists on Quark. I also have a project due soon that's on flash, and I haven't started yet. I can't understand flash at all. I think I may just take an F on it
