Putting an app to sleep on Android Phone

My Samsung android phone displayed that an app I want to use during my upcoming visit to Denmark is using up a lot of my battery life.
I followed my phone's prompt and tapped on "Put app to sleep".
So, what does that actually do?
......and I assume WHEN I actually need the app I can select it and use it without any additional steps to "wake it up"?
