Put a poll in a preexisting thread

Is it really possible to put a poll into a preexisting thread that did not have a poll at the start? Because I thought I saw that once or twice, and I'm trying to do it with a thread of my own. But I can't seem to do that. Is it possible to put up a poll on a preexisting thread? Or will I need to make a brand-new thread just for that?
