Purchases with a Debit Card, Disney Gift Card and MagicBands Questions

Hi folks,

I have two questions and I hope someone can shed some light.

01. I have a debit card linked to my Magic Band but is there a way to pay that off with a Disney Gift Card instead? do they play by limit or do they charge my debit card right away at the time of purchase?
02. If the play by limit, is the limit for every resorts the same before they start charging? If not, then what is the limit for the BoardWalk Inn/Villas?

Thanks much

Also, when you use a credit card or debit card, they may put a $200 reserve on it...until they put the charge in...using a debit card is not always the best way to go, since it automatically reserves $200 and this hold can last several days after you've left a hotel/resort...not just Disney.

The values have a $500 limit, mods $1000, and deluxes $1500 limit. Shortly prior to you hitting that limit, they will charge the card. For instance, last trip we were at POP, and they ran the card at like $420 of the $500 limit. So ballparking where you are against that limit will help. You simply stop by the front desk, and ask to apply the gift card towards your current room charges. You can do this each day if you want, but I usually try to only do it once or twice during the trip.

Do you need a debit card placed down? Can I not just use the PIN number I created with online check in then every night pay off my balance in cash? I used a card to pay off my holiday balance online so do they use this as a back up?

Disney is giving you a house credit line.. you need to secure it with something. Not sure they would let you secure it with cash...

You will be asked to leave a card for incidentals. It could be either credit or debit. They will ask if you want to use the same card you used for the deposit/payments, but need to have something on record. Even if you decline charging privileges on your KTTW/MBs, they want something current/valid in case you decide to walk off with the TV from the room. Or something similar. This is pretty standard for most hotels.

You can however stop by each night to have them settle it up if you prefer. I'd assume they can take cash at the front desk, but there is a chance they may need you to convert your cash into a gift card, and then pay it off that way.

You do not have to have a debit card or anything else on your account, but that means you can not charge anything to your room. You just let them know at check in you do not want any card on your account.

Can't you put the cash or gift cards down on your room like a prepayment even if you put a credit card down? This way you don't have to stop by the front desk before they charge you card?

I wouldn't want to, and wouldn't be surprised if they didn't want to. Way to easy for stuff to get mischarged, or payments lost. At least stopping by you can question things before paying for them. And it's not that hard to stop by the front desk mid trip. Most resorts bring you right by the desk area, either to get to the food court, or to get to the buses, so with a few exceptions it's not that far out of the way.

This information really helps. I always thought the limit is the same for all the resorts.
Thanks again

You can set an account up with cash and use it like a debit account. You can give a credit/dabit card and have them set the account limit for *less* than the default amount (but not more). But neither can be done online beforehand, it has to be done at the front desk. Also, not all CMs know how to do it, so it might require a supervisor to come over and handle it.

Good point. Guess one could keep gift cards in the safe. I'm always afraid I will lose them.

Yes.. but basically what you need to do is go down and pay against your running charges before they charge your normal card.

No, you cannot. You can, however, charge to your room throughout the day and then go pay your balance at the front desk with your gift card every couple of nights. Your credit card will not be charged until you hit or approach $500 for value resorts, $1,000 for moderate resorts, or $1,500 for deluxe resorts.

During our last stay at AKV, they didn't automatically charge our card when we hit the limit. One day I tried to charge on my account and it got declined. When I got back to the resort, I stopped and asked. They said I hit the limit and then asked me if I wanted them to charge the card. I had a gift card I wanted to use, so they used that first and then charged my card for the rest. My balance was re-set after that. I was really happy that they didn't do it automatically!
