PS2 Question

I remember one time when the first Playstation had just come out, I rented one from Blockbuster (you used to be able to rent the systems, but you can't anymore :() and then I took it home and put it on the carpet and started trying to play it, but then it stopped working. We took it back to Blockbuster and then they told us that you can't put it on the carpet or it will not work.
I'm just wondering, does this happen with PS2s?
Because it sure was a pain...

huh?? You can too put a PS on the floor! I have done it several times, they were lying to you or they just did not know what they were talking about. As for the PS2, you can put it on the floor also.

Because Sony was new to the video game world, I think they put the heat desperser unit on the bottom, so when placed on carptet, the heat couldn't escape and then the system would overheat. The PS2 shouldn't do that, but there have been lots of other problems with it though.

What kinds of problems? Anything that should keep me from buying it?

Starters, for JuniorToT's comment, the stand. This lovely little device can make the PS2 go vertical. But somone in deisgn forgot that the rapid movement of the DVDs and CDs in the system and the fact that their held in place by a magnet can cause the DVDs and CDs to wabble and scratch. Same thing when renting a game or DVD from Blockbuster. If there is an anti-theft device on the disc, it can cause it to wabble. There have been other reports of up to 30% of systems (and insame amount, considering that other systems only have a 7% problem rate) have all sorts of memory slot, controller, DVD player, and other software problems.

I've has my PS2 standing on it's side for the year I've had, without using a stand, and it's always been fine with me.

The orginal PS went thru many revisious before it was finally "perfected"..one of the earlier versions had a small problem with overheating due to the airvents being on the bottom of the unit (oops)...this wouldnt be a problem if the unit was on a flat surface such as a table...(this was of course the spawn of various other problems as well..such as laser issues which caused the old PS's to only work if it was upsidedown)

anyway...i dont think the PS2 has this issue
