Projection Mapping

So about a year ago my husband and I got into projection mapping. We're still beginners but we're learning. We picked up a relatively good LCD projector and we use Serif MoviePlus X6 to put together our shows (after the map/masks are created using Photoshop).

We are huge Halloween fans (and of course Disney fans) and we pretty much started planning what we'd do for Halloween 2013 as soon as we showed our last Christmas 2012 show on Christmas Eve. We knew right away we wanted to do a lot of bits but that the biggest part of the show would be POTC themed. We made a deal that hubby would take Halloween and I'd take Christmas and he got to work in January and has been messing about since.

I wanted to post up just a few of our raw footage elements for everyone to see. If there is anyone out there that does anything similar and has any suggestions please please please share them! If you have any thoughts on how we can improve these bits of the show please share those as well. I am quite honestly posting these simply for opinion.

(note: in some cases you see things go full screen - on the house you won't see the top part where our roof is)

Oh... and if you want to see an example of what this looks like when actually projected, here's a short clip from last year's show (our first one ever) though it's not the greatest because the camera I used was horrible.

Holy moly 45 views and no comments! I probably should clarify that I'm looking for anyone's thoughts... open and biased feedback. My DH is dying to know what people think. Is it too much movement on one? Is something too slow/too fast? Do you love it? Do you hate it? Any suggestions on how it can be improved? :D

So as adults we call it projection mapping instead of tracing because...?
Not sure what you mean but "projection mapping" is creating a map of your house and using software to create image/video/effect projections into the spaces you've mapped out (windows/doors/etc.). Creating the map itself (the outline of your house) is tracing the spaces into the computer yes but beyond that the actual projection is quite a bit more involved. :)

Interesting stuff! What projector(s) are you using? Are you mapping the front of the house in 3D or treating it as a flat surface?

One the first video for the opening. Drag out the flag sequence of the Jolly Roger longer and add use audio from Hoist the Colors 2:37 for about 20 seconds or so enough to set a mood and get the crowd to settle.

On the third video where Elizabeth meets Will on the boat use the movie audio of her singing Yo Ho a Pirates life for Me. Then bust into the fast paced sequences with the main pirates music.

That seems to be so much work, you must have a strong passion.

I'm not an expert in video editing but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

The projector we use is a view sonic pj862. Not the best but it gets the job done. The mapping was done by projecting our desktop onto our house, then tracing all the features where we wanted to project. To get the most coverage that the projector would allow, we are projecting from a pretty severe angle, so basically we keystone the videos to match the framework that we drew out from the house. The far right wall is actually at a 90* angle from the majority of the video, but with the mapped frame of the house and key stoning the videos, everything works for viewing well.

We actually have a video dedicated to "hoist the colors" as well as a few other songs. With the show running for about 3 hours a night for the week of Halloween, we wanted to make sure we weren't ready to rip our hair out after hearing only a few songs over and over. Will definitely try playing a bit with the fading. Thank you for the input.

you should make a tutorial of the process you went through , I am sure it would be of great interest to many people
We've actually been talking about doing that because most folks who do shows like this act like its some closely guarded secret. LOL
