Priceline: Florida No. 2 state for spring breakers

(SOUTH FLORIDA BUSINESS JOURNAL) -- Sun and security are the watchwords for spring break 2003, according to the hotel service of Norwalk, Conn.-based online travel company Priceline.com.
For the month of March, Priceline said with 92 of the top 100 spots in its survey, home-soil destinations have almost completely eclipsed vacation spots outside the United States.
Florida, the company said, was the second most-booked state, with 10 of the top 50 spots. Top bookings were in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, the Keys, Tampa and Orlando, according to the company. The company said the No. 1, most-booked destination for March is Walt Disney World in Orlando.
The most-booked state, though, is California, which Priceline said holds 11 of the top 50 vacation spots, including the beaches and amusement parks of Southern California as well as the San Francisco Bay area.
Colder U.S. cities also captured spots in the top 100, including New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Seattle and Philadelphia.
Non-U.S. destinations in the top 100 included London's Soho, Kensington and Bloomsburg districts; Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal in Canada; Cancun, Mexico; and Amsterdam, Holland.
Chris Soder, president of Priceline hotel services, said the idea of the March spring break season as a popular time for people to get away from winter and unwind hasn't changed.
"But with geopolitical uncertainties," he added, "more vacationers are opting to stick closer to home in 2003."
