Argh, Mateys! "You've seen accursed treasure. 'Not afraid of evil curses,' says ye. Properly warned ye be, says I..."
--Narration from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland
Which came first, the Disney ride or the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, starring Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and the lovely Keira Knightley? Well, accentuating that ambiguity is exactly the goal of the flick cowriter Ted Elliott, who conjured the spirit of Disney's Imagineers by evoking the sensibility of the popular ride. Of course, the film, a raucous thrill ride in its own right, also hangs on to Depp's velvet coattails as it sails the high seas.
"Twenty years from now, we want people to think the movie inspired the ride," says Elliott, who actually dreamed of building rides at Disneyland back when he was in elementary school. "We just totally geeked out on the ride; this is the best ride of its kind ever built anywhere."
That hyperbole is understandable, considering that Disney, which controls many of the purse strings of producer Jerry Bruckheimer's company, insisted on the Pirates of the Caribbean moniker for this high-concept swashbuckling adventure. Good thinking, because the biggest laughs come from a couple of pointed "ride tableaus" that are visualized in the movie, especially a mangy dog with keys taunting a prison cell full of pirates as the rafters burn. Watch for it, it's a hoot.
But Depp's inspiration for Captain Jack Sparrow wasn't the product of any theme-park ride. "A pirate of the 18th century seems like a rock 'n' roll star of today," says Depp, "and the coolest rock star of all time is Keith Richards--that wisdom, that confidence. Then on the other side, I took a little bit of this cartoon character I always loved--Pepe le Pew, the skunk. He smelled horrible, but he was convinced he was the absolute ladies' man, with a perpetual martini glass."
Depp still hasn't let go of Captain Jack. He's even still sporting the gold pirate's teeth. "Getting them off will be...interesting." He may not have to if a sequel comes together. "I hope so," he says. "I had such a ball playing the guy. I'd love to do it again."
Let's hope his "Arrrgh, me bucko!" translates into "Arrrgh, me boffo" in theaters, so we'll get a second chance to see Depp buckle his swash.

as a big johnny depp fan, i know how particular he is about movies (which gave me a clue as to how good Pirates was going to be before i saw it) so for him to say that he hopes there'll be a sequel and that he'd love to do it again is rather a big thing. and i can't tell you how excited i am that he's willing to do it again cuz i don't think a sequel to Pirates would be nearly as good without him! as always, he stole the show! and what would a Pirate movie be without Capt. Jack Sparrow? it'd be nice if Orli and Keira came back too, but if Johnny's back, that's really all that matters. really, i've told my sister that i think they should have a spin off type movie just about Jack Sparrow! i think that'd be great!
anyway, just thought i'd let you all know (if you didn't know already) that Johnny is definately back for the sequel! :sohappy:
