Possible SHIELD spinoff for Mockingbird

Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood have been tapped to star in the potential Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff, EW has confirmed. Marvel and ABC declined to comment. Deadline.com first reported the news.

Palicki and Blood both joined the ABC super series in season 2. Friday Night Lights alum Palicki plays Bobbi Morse, otherwise known as Mockingbird, while British actor Blood portrays her former husband and mercenary, Lance Hunter. The new duo have provided a fun Mr. and Mrs. Smith-like dynamic that would surely play into the spinoff. Currently, however, the on-again-off-again couple are on the rocks after Morse deceived Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team in order to steal Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) toolbox for another faction of S.H.I.E.L.D. headed up by Edward James Olmos, among others.

First reported by EW, the spinoff is being developed by S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Jeffrey Bell (Angel, The X-Files) and S.H.I.E.L.D. writer Paul Zbyszewski (Lost, Hawaii Five-0).

I know I'll end up watching, but I just wish that they would've moved on to different characters and branched out into different areas of the Marvel Universe. I'm still waiting for Runaways to show up either as a movie or series.

The project was set to star Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood, who play the formerly married duo Agent Bobbi Morse and mercenary Lance Hunter. The spinoff was rumored to be born out of events that happen on the flagship series, which saw Morse kidnapped by Ward (Brett Dalton) during this season’s penultimate episode. But following the announcement of the spinoff’s development, many vocal fans questioned why the flagship series would give up two characters that have contributed to S.H.I.E.L.D.’s creative turnaround in the second season.

“We absolutely love those characters on S.H.I.E.L.D.We think S.H.I.E.L.D. hit its creative stride this year,” Lee told reporters ahead of the network’s upfronts presentation on Tuesday. He is, however, still leaving the door open for a spinoff in the future. “We thought the right thing now is to leave them on S.H.I.E.L.D.,because S.H.I.E.L.D. is so strong on the moment.”
