Possible food poisoning from Be Our Guest?

On Wednesday, I was so excited to eat lunch and dinner at Be Our Guest! The lunch was delicious and I had the kids shrimp. I felt fine and we went along our day. A while later, we went for a late dinner. I had the shrimp and scallops and immediately regretted it. I'm a huge lover of seafood but now I'm going to avoid it at all costs. I came down with food poisoning from undercooked shrimp and had to miss Wishes (I've never seen it in my two years of visiting.) I had to go to first aid, deal with the lady trying to tell me I was dehydrated (which is a symptom of food poisoning) and struggle out of Magic Kingdom at night in a wheel chair because I was too dizzy and nauseous to walk. You would expect Disney to be more prepared when it came to their food but I was sickened and had to miss all my rides on the last day of visiting. Sigh. We aren't big complainers so we didn't complain at all about the food poisoning, we guessed it must happen often there as the cooks may be rushed.

Oh man, that sucks! I'm allergic to seafood. But my mom loves it, and she avoids it at WDW because she doesn't even want to chance it just in case. But you'd think if there was a place that was guaranteed to be good to go when it comes to seafood that it'd be WDW.... especially with those prices!

Exactly!! Ah I was so upset I got sick. Shrimp is one of my favourites. And missing my last day at Disney wasn't fun. But now I know for sure I can't trust Disney's seafood. It was expensive and I can't believe they don't take better care of their food there.

You might wanna shoot them an e-mail. You never know what they might have to offer, if anything.

Worst case scenario: if you get the, "thanks for informing us" reply, you're exactly where you are now.
Best case scenario: They apologize and maybe offer you a free meal on them your next trip

Sorry about your experience. Do you think you may have unknowingly developed an allergy to any of the ingredients? I ask because I developed one for shrimp in my mid-20s. Prior to that, I could eat any shrimp at any time. After a bad episode in which I thought I had food poisoning too, I had myself checked and found out by an allergist I am no longer to eat certain foods including shrimp.

This happened to my husband and it ended up being an allergy to shrimp. He was completely incapacitated like the OP until the next day. He had been able to eat shrimp even up until the night before this happened. The onset can be that fast.

This is possible but I've eaten shrimp many times before. The shrimp tasted a bit fishy, maybe it was undercooked. Maybe I have an allergy to lobster as it was included in the dish. I've been tested before for allergies but only tree nuts. I may have to get myself checked for seafood. I don't like to point fingers at Disney and their chefs but I do believe it was food poisoning. I may be wrong. I won't know until I get checked out!

I did send them an email, awaiting a reply!

They won't admit it was food poisoning unless you have proof. And that is very specific test results. Hopefully it wasn't, and hopefully it isn't a new allergy, maybe you just had an off night tummy-wise. Not a fun way to spend the night, no matter what was the cause. :(

You do know it takes three hours or so for food poisoning to kick in. Most of the time it's a day to three days, up to 90 days in rare cases. Could you have been coming down with a virus just at the wrong time?

How could you possibly know what caused the illness?

Of course, we don't know what it was exactly but all signs for me personally point to food poisoning. I know it has happened before at Disney World. I don't like to point fingers at the chefs and try to make them look bad but it could be anything. Yes, I had a horrible night and morning the next day but felt better about twelve hours later. Food poisoning can kick in anywhere from a few minutes to 90 days. I'm just thankful everyone at Disney World was very kind and thoughtful while helping me. I received an extremely kind apologetic gift in return for my illness and I'm very thankful. For all I know, I may be allergic to lobster or I was just having a rough night with my stomach. Thank you all.

It's happened all over the world. Glad you got something free out of it.

I don't know why people keep saying that. It is not true. There are so many different types of poisoning you can get from food. Some hit almost instantly and others take a few hours. I have had food poisoning a few times in my life and some have come on within an hour of eating. A person can pin point and know which food has made them sick a lot of times. Just by figuring out what you ate different from your family, etc.

What Are the Symptoms of Food Poisoning?
Generally, food poisoning causes some combination of nausea, vomiting, and diarrheathat may or may not be bloody, sometimes with other symptoms.

  • After eating tainted food, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting, can start as early as one hour in the case of staph and as late as 10 days in the case of campylobacter. It may take even longer to develop symptoms from parasite infections such as Giardia. Symptoms can last from one day up to a couple of months or longer, depending on the type of infection.
  • Vomiting, diarrhea, sweating, dizziness, tearing in the eyes, excessive salivation, mental confusion, and stomach pain may be symptoms of chemical or toxin food poisoning such as that from poisonous mushrooms.
  • Partial loss of speech or blurred vision, muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, muscle paralysis from the head down through the body, and vomiting may indicate botulism, a severe but very rare type of bacterial food poisoning.

Thanks. I was basing my thoughts that it wasn't from what she ate for dinner because of how fast it would have started if it was from dinner. If it had been undercooked shrimp served at dinner, given it was almost immediately, I would think you would have seen a good portion of the restaurant become significantly ill immediately.

Agree with you that the timing can be from almost immediately to many days/weeks. Totally disagree that you can pinpoint the source. Since the timing is so variable and that 2 people can eat the same dish but only 1 portion may be contaminated, it is just about impossible to figure it out based on one case.

My wife had eaten all kinds of shellfish her entire life until just a few years ago. After a night of shrimp and crab she woke up in the middle of the night with a severe rash and her tongue swelling to the point that she could barely breathe. Turns out she now has a shellfish allergy. So, just because you've been able to eat something your entire life doesn't mean you can't develop an allergy some day. Probably food poisoning in this case, but not always the answer every time.

Food Poisoning happens which sucks... Sorry for you.... You can eat Shrimp Raw, so it was probably stored wrong or who knows.
