I think I know what the most common answer will be, but I’m curious to see what your habits are when it comes to new Disney (and other theme park) attractions!
If its an attraction I'm excited for I try not to watch before I go but sometimes I lose the battle.
If its something I'm on the fence about doing or don't think I'll like it then I watch the video immediately to either confirm I don't want to make time for it or decide that I should consider doing it at least once.
I'll watch because I know experiencing an attraction is better in person. It also gives me a heads up for anything that I should be aware of that might scare my girls, and if it is a must do.
To this day I have never seen a video of Snow White's Mine Train. Both times we have been to Magic Kingdom since they opened it there have been insane lines to get on and even getting a fastpass at the proper time wasn't effective. So other than seeing it from the outside and hearing reviews of it on here I don't know what it looks like.
I voted "keep it as a surprise". I guess I am definitely in the minority here.
Don't do videos anymore. No disrespect to Martin but I watch the videos and I never get excited to do the ride or wish for the ride to come back. I barely do resort videos. just not my thing.
With the exception of the Asian parks, which I will likely never visit, I never watch anything beforehand, other than maybe the official promotional films, which give you an idea what to expect without spoiling any surprises. My first rise on Expedition Everest was perfect because I had no idea the backwards section was coming. Although I remain bitter to this day about the yeti not moving (kidding, I don't care).
Its hard to ignore the hype and reviews especially when your next trip isnt for a while. So I do read the posted comments and reviews then skip to the youtube videos when they are posted to see what everyone else has been able to experience as it initially opens. It doesnt ruin my desire to ride or spoil the surprise, it just makes me have a greater desire to be there to do it myself.
I look for the video the day after the attraction/land opens, to get a preview for my next visit and to satisfy my curiosity. This does not spoil it for me when I finally visit and experience the new attraction/land, because, and I've made this comment multiple times on here when people start bashing a new addition only based on a video, you cannot get the full experience through YouTube-only when you are there and experiencing it in person can you get that. We will be taking our 15 year old neice for her first trip to WDW in November, and I have offered to show her some WDW walkthroughs and attraction videos on YouTube, but she says that she wants to be surprised. I applaud her for her dedication-she's a better person than me in that regard.
I wait for the surprise. I deliberately stayed away from ride videos and information about FOP (except checking to see if it was suitable for me). When I finally got to ride it last September, it made the experience even better.
I intend to do the same for Millennium Falcon and Rise of the Resistance so that I can save the surprise for September 2020.
