Points question, bank or loose?

Ok I am new to this so please bear with me. My wife and I purchased into the DVC starting with 100 points at SS last September (2011) we got the full 100 points for 2011 and we banked them. We get 100 points for 2012 so on our next trip Dec 2012 we will have 200 points to use. We are already booked into a 1 bedroom villa at SS 183 points.

We will have 17 points left unused that we can bank in Oct 2012. We do not plan to go at all in 2013 so we plan to bank those points as well Oct 2013 and after we get out 2014 points we will have 217 points to use keeping us on our plan to go every other year or a cruise in 2014.

I guess my question is if we bank the 17 points in 2012, and bank the 100 in 2013 can that be done or can you only keep one years points in the bank?

If I can keep the 217 for 2014 we would be able to get a 2 bed or tree house villa at SS both 208 points (based on 2012 points) this would allow me to bring some family along with us on the 2014 trip at no extra room costs.

If not can I sell those 17 points before the Oct 31st 2012 bank dead line date so they do not go to waste?

Thanks

Points from 2012 can we be moved into 2011 (borrowed) or 2013 (banked). If they moved into another year, they need to be used within that year or lost. You can't keep banking your points until you can use them.

The 2012 points can only be banked one year forward. You cannot get them into your 2014 Use Year.

You could try to rent them but for such a small number of points, that may be easier said than done. Most renters are non-members looking for a multi-day reservation.

Transferring the points to another member is also a possibility but since each member is limited to one transfer per year, you would need to find someone who is willing to burn their one transfer on 17 points.

If possible, look at adding another night to your 2012 stay. You may have to borrow a few points from 2013 in order to complete the reservation but (IMO) that's preferable to losing the points or expending a lot of energy trying to rent them.

Doesn't that depend on whether or not they points left are 2011 points or not? They do not always tap the banked first.

It doesn't matter how you stack them - 17 of his intended points come from 2012.. you can't carry those into 2014. So doesn't matter what get used, his total isn't 217 in 2014

To simplify this... you basically have (3) years to use your points... the year PRIOR to the use year, the actual USE year, and the year AFTER the USE year. So... 2012 points could have been borrowed into 2011, used during 2012, or banked into 2013. The points banked into 2013 would have to be used by the end of the 2013 use year.

Hmm.. did that really simplify it?? LOL

They should be using banked points first for any reservation within that use year. If I bank 50 points into next year, I want those used first before they take from my current use year. Otherwise if I have banked points left over then they would just be wasted. I have never heard of anything other than banked points used first.

Does this mean he cannot bank points and go every other year? Or he can if it is used the year after? If he uses the 100 2012 points in 2013 and also the 2013 points than he will have 200 points?

You will lose those 17 points because you are trying to bank them 2 years which you cannot do. So I would try to sell them or what I find even better is to give them to family/friend as a gift who is going to florida any maybe they can get a night on property.

Since you will only have 200 points in 2014 you can buy 8 more points to bring you to that 208 total.

I agree, anytime I have banked points and I am making a reservation, I ask are you using and they always confirm they use those first.

As for the 17 bakned here, i would amend my next reservation to make sure I use them all, stay another day, do something, dont ever lose points!

Yes, you can bank and go every other year. For example, say your use year is in January and you got 200 points on Jan 1, 2012. From Jan 1, 2012-Jan 1, 2013 you can choose to either use your points of bank them into the 2013 use year. If you were to bank then you would then have 400 points for your 2013 use year beginning on Jan 1, 2013, of which those 200 from 2012 must be used before Jan 1, 2014 or they will be lost. You can only bank points one year forward, so you couldn't put 2012 points into 2014.

You should try to use them if possible. Either stay an additional night, or move up to a bigger room, or split the stay and move to a more expensive (points wise) hotel for part of the trip.

Thanks for the responses.

If I stay another night even with the 17 points I would have left I will need more then 200 which leaves me dipping into the points for our next trip I would rather not do that. We will have our daughter with us turning 2 years old during the trip so I will not be changing resorts half way through our stay its just not worth it to me and unfortunately we can only stay 7 days due to my work schedule.

With that said I will probably loose the points if I am unable to rent them or transfer them to another DVC member which I might be able to do I know someone who might be able to take them.

Anyone know a good place to start if I wanted to rent out the 17 points? Anything I should know about renting out points?

Thanks Again!
