Plantinum Editions and Gold Collection

I just have a question about the different collection of Disney Animated DVDs. Maybe there's just something I don't know. I understand the Platinum Editions are Disney's most popular and best Animated movies with a bunch of bonus features. But I noticed that some of my favorites like Dumbo, Fox and the Hound, and Robin Hood, are being sold as Gold Collections. I was wondering if I should just buy them now, or if I you think they are going to rerelease them soon with more bonus features and stuff. I've heard the gold collection doesn't really have that many bonus features, which is okay, but I just don't want to buy the same movies twice... Ofcourse if they do rerelease them "upgraded" it probably wouldn't be for awhile. I'm just confused with all of the different collections :o and they seem to be rereleasing some in the Platinum series that have already been on DVD. So any help would be nice! I guess my question is if I should buy all those three (not at the same time, but when I have the money) now or if there's better versions coming out. And what do you guys think of the Platinum Editions, is it worth collecting all of them?

I feel like I'm asking dumb questions, but I'm just curious. :)

this is the official list of the 14 titles included in the Platinum Collection:

Snow White
Beauty and the Beast
The Lion King
Aladdin
Bambi
Cinderella
Lady and the Tramp
The Little Mermaid
101 Dalmatians
The Jungle Book
Sleeping Beauty
Peter Pan
Pinnochio
Fantasia

These are the Special Editions which are almost exactly like the Platinums except for the name:

Atlantis (out of print)
Alice in Wonderland (Masterpiece Edition)
Mulan
Pocahontas (10th Anniversary Edition)
Lilo and Stitch
Tarzan (unconfirmed)
Hercules (unconfirmed)

Everything else are just going to stay as Gold Editions

And there is an anniversary edition of Pocahontas coming out in a week or two, that will probably be considered another Platinum edition.

My philosophy on Disney movies has always been "If you see it, buy it, because you may not see it again for a LONG LONG time." :brick:

Yeah I figured I should just buy them since Disney seems to lock there movies in the "disney vault" and we don't see them for a long time, but just thought I'd ask about all the collections. Thanks for the responses, and the lists of special editons, you guys pretty much answered my questions. :)

If I may correct a few minor mistakes:
Atlantis is still in print. I ordered one just 2 months ago. :animwink:
Tarzan had a Collector's Edition, it is now OOP, tho it's being re-released in Europe next week.
I'd like to add Hunchback who is rumored to see a 10th anniversary edition next year!

I really need to start buying them as soon as they hit the shelves. I missed so many of the great ones I wanted to get. I hate how they limit how many they release. I didn't get a chance to get any of the Limited Editions and missed out on getting BatB, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. I'm trying to get all 44 Animated Classics and some of them are going to be really hard to get.

Where can you find an official list of when they are going to come out?

I never got the chance to get some of the movies when they were available. How often do they rerelease them?

Every 7 years. As for titles being OOP, Disney announces what movies will be locked up in the vault a few weeks ahead of the scheduled late January date.

On May 1, 2003, Disney announced a change in their release schedule for the Platinum Collection. Previously, Disney released one Platinum Edition DVD set a year (each fall) and put the title on moratorium the end of the following January, where it would remain for ten years. Their new plan calls for TWO Platinum Edition DVD sets a year (one in March, one in October), so that all original 10 titles will be released by the fall of 2007, which some forecast as the time when the next home video format (high-definition DVD) may truly begin to flourish. In addition, the moratorium periods will now be just five years.

I found that after my last post. I guess it's every five years. I don't know if that means the Platinum Editions will be rereleased or if another edition of the movie will be out. The same article went on the say that 4 other movies were also added.

Wasn't there a Collector's Edition of Atlantis available a while back?

This is off topic but, The Pocahontas 10th Anniversary Edition is a definite "must-have" it is what Pocahontas should have been. and you'll never be able to be satisfied by the original cut ever again.

I think Pocahontas *should* be part of the Platinum line as does Lilo and Stitch and Mulan

I watched this the other day. What was different? It's been awhile since I saw the original but nothing really stood out as being different.

The whole "If I Never Knew You" scene and the reprise at the end. Completes the story much better in my honest opnion.
stitchcastle, to answer your question... Yes there was a CE of Atlantis, and there still is (and quite an amazing set I might add)!
