Pixar to take bite out of Disney??

I would let Pixar go before I gave up ownership of the first 5 movies and thier characters. You could hire the Pixar people away and have them work for Disney.

I hope Eisner doesn't drop the ball on this one. They need Pixar more than Pixar needs Disney.

Not necessairly..

Pixar cant market themselves...contrary to what people believe. Disney is the power behind all that...and marketing is the key to success of all the movies. Granted they are nicely done with good stories etc...but its nicely timed exposure that helps boost the popularity of the film.

Not gunna happen...having done time at BOTH companies, i can tell you that most people would rather take a HUGE pay cut and keep working for pixar, then hop over to DFA. Not to mention the people who do most of the major "concepts" at pixar are higher-up exects who own lots of stock. (read the credits..its always the same 5 people)

I don't know if I agree. Apple seems to market themselves pretty darn well, and Jobs is a ruthless negotiator. If Disney messes this up, Pixar will land on it's feet somewhere to their advantage.

Wellllll...marketing to kids is what i meant. I see so many pixar toys out there...all made/marketed by Disney...even months before the movie comes out...kids know ALL the characters names. Its amazing. Apple can make pretty computers...but its not quite the same effect.

Good point. Still, I don't think they'd have any problems finding someone to make toys for them. All I'm saying is that, aside from Pirates and Stitch, the biggest Disney movies recently have been Pixar movies. I hope Disney finds a way to keep them on board.

Brings me back to marketing too...as much as the movie was horrible..the toys from Treasure planet sold amazing.....thats all disneys end...pixar DOES handle the story portion of their co-product..so yes..in a sence disney DOES need them, but the majority of the profits come from the overall franchise. This includes merchandice, rights, product..etc...This is why that without disney (or other parter of equal value), pixar could only survive in their previous state..doing commercials.

In the end..they need each other. Its "easy money" for disney, and its a good booster for pixar to get their movies into mainstream status.....which has a nice monotary benefit ;)

I believe Disney and Pixar to have a very symbiotic relationship. Pixar makes the quality films, Disney markets the daylights out of them. Disney's resources with respect to marketing are awesome - they own television networks, have long been in the toy and clothing industries, and can plop characters in their theme parks as billboards for Pixar films.

I have to refute the assertion that Steve Jobs or Apple are skilled marketers. They had a far superior product in the 80's, but Microsoft had a much better handle on marketing and partnerships. Apple is now little more than a niche player, due mostly to being out-marketed.

It's in both companies best interests to keep their partnership going. I hope they can work out a loooonnnngggg extension to their contract.

Another good point. I have to point out, that after Apple shoved out Jobs, Microsoft came to Sculley (who came over to Apple from Pepsi) and offered to distribute the Apple OS the same way they had distributed MS-DOS. Microsoft was having a hard time with Windows 1.0, and thought the Apple OS was an ideal partnership solution.

In what has to be one of the most short-sighted corporate decisions ever, Sculley turned Microsoft down, just to retain control over all things Apple.

If Sculley had said yes, we'd all be running the Apple OS instead of Windows right now. Just the thought of never having seen a blue screen of death drives me nuts to this day. Can't blame Jobs for that one.

I would let Pixar go before I gave up ownership of the films they have already made. Remember no matter what happens Disney owns the movies and characters to all the Disney/Pixar films. If Jobs wants ownership of movies (new and old) I would let them go and be happy with the 5 they made. Also, Disney can always hire away Pixar talent away. Pixar doesn't hold all the cards here.
