Pixar Out-Disneys Disney

This is a great article about Pixar and how they are doing such a good job making the kind of stuff Disney should be. It's too long to post here (4 pages), so here is the link.

In a nutshell it talks about the creative people at Pixar and their work style, which is different from the current Disney idea of pumping out films.

I like Pixar, but I am still a little worried about Jobs. Even after this.

I read the article and of course immediately wanted to work for the company doing anything!! It's actually just over the bridge from SF. I know a lot of people have beef with Steve Jobs, but just compare him to he-whose-name-shall-not-be-spoken and look at the results.

I think John Lassiter probably has brought a lot of the "Disney" style to Pixar, as he came from Disney animation years ago. He has demonstrated this in earlier works and in interviews.

It also appears that Steve Jobs, like a good manager, lets Lassiter and company have the freedom to get the job done correctly.

That is what Disney used to be, and how they made their name. Years ago, Disney was creating worldwide, long-term respect and demand while companies like Hanna-Barbera were doing what Disney does today... cranking out cheap stuff that made money (and was fun) but didn't necessarily build a long-term foundation.

Pixar is using Disney's old winning formula: foregoing cheap bucks for respect and anticipation that drives better long-term sales growth.

I agree. I have a serious problem with Disney producing films at $35 million touting that they're cheaper than Pixar's production costs. I hope they also remembered to include quality storylines in their cheaper films.

Great article. I just read the print version, in Wired Magazine at the bookstore. Pictures and everything.

It just made me sad. John Lassiter and company could really do well running the Walt Disney Feature Animation department.

I just wish current Disney management (and "strategic planners") could read this article and be reminded of the strategies for creative story development that DISNEY originally taught Pixar staff... that Disney has forgotten.
