I know I'm way behind on this trend, but I think I want to start pin trading/collecting. I'm completely clueless on where to start, what pins or collection of pins are hot to keep an eye out for ect.....help anyone?

The one collection I always go after are the cast member only pins. This is a set of pins released to cast members only and the only way to get your hands on them is to trade with a cast member. You can identify the cast only ones by the silver mickey icon located somewhere on the pin. It's fairly small and you must know what you are looking for

I've been collecting Disney pins since 1999, so I've been doing it for a while and can offer some "been there, done that" tips.

My biggest advice to you is to collect what you like. Pins that are "hot" change often. It's really silly to follow these trends, spend a lot of money on designs you don't particularly like, and then have the market crash and you be stuck with pins you hate.

Even the "Hidden Mickey" collection as the CM lanyard exclusives are now called are not worth much, but they are still fun to try to find.

I suggest pick a couple themes, like a favorite character, movie, ride, park, etc. and go from there. Keep it simple. For example, my main theme is Figment and I have 160 pins with him on it. I also get pins that have a special meaning to me.

Retail pin prices range from $6.95 and can go all the way up to $95 or more (yes, for one single, albiet gigantic, pin). Set a limit for yourself because this is one majorly expensive hobby (you thought scrapbooking was bad!).

There's a Pin Event in September and if you can make it, it's a great place to meet other collectors and the designs are really nice.

My suggestion for resources are PinPics.com, which is a database that lists close to every Disney pin that has been released, and Dizpins.com which is a pin news site with a connecting message board (of which I'm a member).

Hope this helps, and if you need any additional information, please let me know!

Just collect what you like! Some "hot" pins to collect are Figment/Dreamfinder and Haunted Mansion pins. Those just happen to be my two favorites. It takes a little more work to hunt them down because they're so popular. But I think that's part of the fun. :D

Kristi Kay,
I noticed you were from Branson. I was recently down in Branson and I always hit the Disney Outlet at Tangers Mall. I was there May 7th and bought a boat load of pins for less than $2.00 w/tax. I think the most expensive pin was $1.89 and I didn't get the Branson locals discount. I suggest you keep an eye out there, buy as many 'cheap' pins you can affoard and save them for the next time you are at WDW. Then use these 'cheap' pins to trade for ones you like.

My husband is into the pirate pins, my youngest daughter is into the Princesses, my older daughter is more into the ride pins and I love the holiday pins. As others have said, this becomes a very addictive and expensive hobby. Fun, but $$$. If you can save some money by getting those 'cheap' pins to trade for the ones you want that will help stretch your budget.

Good luck and have fun!

I would like to echo what those above me have said.

Collect what you like - that is really the most important thing when pin trading. It kills me when a child sees a pin they want and their parents won't allow them to trade for it because they would be "trading down" or "it is not a hidden Mickey pin." All that matters is that you like the pin - pin trends will ebb and flow, but generally what you like does not. Pick a theme and you will have a blast hunting down pins for your collection.

I chose Hercules as my first theme. Since Hercules is a fairly obscure movie you don't see many Herc pins on cast member lanyards...that makes it all the more exciting when I find one. I now have 70+ Hercules/Meg/Phil/Hades pins and I still get excited when I find one I don't have yet.
